Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- Penny Hardaway scored a season-high 30 points and Darrell Armstrong added 16, including five straight during a 20-3 third-quarter run that lifted the Orlando Magic to a 92-77 victory over the Detroit Pistons.

Hardaway contributed four points during the decisive burst as the Magic turned a four-point deficit into a 63-50 lead on Horace Grant's 18-footer with 2:34 left in the period. Detroit got not closer than nine points thereafter.

"I'm happy for our club because they really weren't a part of the celebration," said Magic coach Chuck Daly, who took part in pregame ceremonies honoring the Pistons championship teams of 1989-90. "But I loved the celebration, it was terrific. When you come in here as an opponent, a win is a win and we really wanted to win the game."

Daly coached Detroit to back-to-back titles.

Armstrong dished out six assists and rookie Matt Harpring had 13 points for the Magic, who were coming off Friday's 115-68 rout at Chicago and have won 10 of their last 14 games.

Bison Dele scored 20 points and Grant Hill added 18 for Detroit, which was bidding for a season-high seventh straight win. The Pistons have dropped all three meetings this season with Orlando, which has taken nine of the last 13 games in the series.

"We didn't play smart tonight," said Pistons coach Alvin Gentry, whose team committed 23 turnovers. "We did not give ourselves an opportunity. Turnovers gave us a big problem. No great plays tonight."

After two ties in the opening moments of the second half, Lindsey Hunter and Dele scored to give the Pistons a 47-43 lead with 9:40 to play in the third period. But Detroit scored only three points over the next 7:06 as the Magic took control.

"We just came out the last two nights and we played well in the third quarter," Armstrong said. "I guarantee you we outscored our opponent by probably 20 to 30 points in the third quarter in the two games combined. That's a big key for our team."

Isaac Austin halved Orlando's deficit with two free throws and Grant forced a 47-47 tie by nailing a 20-footer. Detroit regained the lead when Hill made the first of two free throws, but Grant made another 20-footer and Orlando was on top for good.

Hunter answered Hardaway's layup with a short jumper, but Harpring made one free throw and Armstrong followed with a 15-foot jumper. After Jerome Williams failed to convert a layup, Armstrong drilled a 3-pointer that gave Orlando a 57-50 advantage with 4:33 left in the quarter.

Hardaway pushed the lead to nine points with a pair of free throws and Harpring followed with a 14-footer. Grant's jumper made it a 13-point game and gave the Magic complete control.

Grant had 10 points and six rebounds and Harpring also pulled down six boards for Orlando, which shot 50 percent (33-of-66) but was 5-of-16 from beyond the arc. All nine players who played for the Magic grabbed at least two rebounds as they built a 34-31 advantage on the boards.

A layup by Hunter with one-tenth of a second left in the third pulled the Pistons within 68-59 and it was 74-65 with 8:24 remaining in the final period after Hill connected on two free throws. But Hardaway scored five straight points on a jumper and 3-pointer and Orlando cruised to victory.

"Fans do get guys going, believe it or not," Hardaway said. "There was a guy who was heckling me the whole time.

"We feel really good. Tonight was really big. Detroit only has 12 losses and we have 10, and we would have moved closer to the pack if they had beaten us. We just wanted to get some space between us and the pack because they were really fired up."

Jud Buechler had a season-high nine rebounds and Dele handed out five assists for the Pistons, who connected on 47 percent (33-of-70) of their field goals but were 0-13 from 3-point range.

"We've been winning the last couple of games because we have been getting easy shots," Hunter said. "That opens up the offense. We just didn't do that tonight. Tonight we were a little flat on some things."

"These guys can shoot," Armstrong said of the Pistons. "All we wanted to do is contest. I'm sure fans know about this team in Detroit. When Chuck was coaching them, they contested every shot. That's what we're trying to do right now."

Pistons guard Jerry Stackhouse did not play due to a sprained ankle. Orlando guard Nick Anderson was scratched from the lineup due to a hamstring injury, with Armstrong, one of the league's best sixth men, starting in his place.
