Game Story

MINNEAPOLIS (Ticker) -- Rookie Andrae Patterson and Tom Hammonds led a second-quarter bench surge and the Minnesota Timberwolves shut down Michael Finley in a 100-93 victory over the Dallas Mavericks, their fourth straight triumph.

Patterson is a 6-9 forward who was the 46th overall pick out of Indiana and had scored only 42 points all season. But he got 10 in a 12-2 burst in the second quarter that gave Minnesota the lead for good.

Hammonds, a nine-year veteran, also collected 10 points in the period, which ended with Minnesota holding a 51-43 lead. He had scored only 95 points this year.

"Right now, I'm in a rhythm," said Hammonds, who made 7-of-10 shots. "I don't worry about missing a shot. I'll just grab the ball and take another one. The key is being aggressive."

Hammonds scored 14 points, Bobby Jackson added 13 and Patterson 11 -- one shy of his season high -- as the Timberwolves enjoyed a 47-26 edge in bench scoring. Kevin Garnett and Sam Mitchell paced the starters with 18 points apiece as Minnesota completed a 5-1 homestand.

"Their bench came in and stepped it up," Mavs center Shawn Bradley said. "Three of their bench players were in double figures."

The 6-11 Garnett hounded Finley, who leads the Mavericks at 18.5 points per game but missed his first 11 shots and scored just seven points, all in the last four minutes. Gary Trent had 26 points for Dallas, which has lost nine straight road games.

"The two shots Finley hit were both desperation shots and I don't think Kevin was on him on either one," Minnesota coach Flip Saunders said. "Kevin did just an unbelievable job on him. That's why I've said all along, when people talk about the best defensive players in the league -- a lot of people say (Dikembe) Mutombo, a lot of people say (Alonzo) Mourning -- but we put Kevin on the best player on the other team and he's able to neutralize them."

"Mike had a stinker tonight and you kind of wonder, `What if?'" Mavs coach Don Nelson said. "If he would have had just an average night, we would have had a real good shot at this one. But he didn't."

The Timberwolves also won despite an injury to starting point guard Terrell Brandon, who played only 20 minutes and will not travel with the team on its three-game road trip.

"We'll keep him back," Saunders said. "We'll wait and see what happens. I would say it's very doubtful that he will play in these three games."

A hook shot by Bradley gave the Mavs a 31-27 lead with 7:23 left in the second quarter before Patterson rattled off 10 points in just over three minutes, including a drive that gave Minnesota a 39-33 lead with 4:14 remaining.

The Wolves widened their eight-point halftime edge to 66-53 on a 15-foot runner by Jackson with 5:02 left in the third quarter. Mitchell scored seven points in the period, which ended with Minnesota holding a 73-64 advantage.

With Finley struggling, Dallas had difficulty getting back into the game. He finally hit an 18-footer with 3:56 remaining. A 3-pointer by Steve Nash, who had 12 points and seven assists, cut the deficit to 93-90 with 59 seconds to play.

Garnett could not save a bad pass underneath, giving the Mavs a chance to tie. But Nash missed a 3-pointer and fouled Jackson with 21 seconds to go. Jackson maded the first and missed the second, but Mitchell rebounded the miss and was fouled. His two foul shots made it 96-90 with 19 seconds remaining.

Finley made a long 3-pointer for his second basket, but two free throws each by Mitchell and Garnett sealed it.

"The poor guy struggled," Nelson said. "I felt bad for him. Kevin Garnett, with his size, seems to bother him a little bit. But even when he had open looks, or other people guarding him, he wasn't really that close."

Dennis Scott and Reggie Jordan scored nine points apiece for the Wolves, who shot 45 percent (37-of-82) from the field and made 25-of-31 free throws. Garnett grabbed nine rebounds.

Bradley scored 14 points and rookie Dirk Nowitzki added 12 for the Mavs, who shot 47 percent (34-of-72) and made 22-of-25 from the line. Trent pulled down eight rebounds.
