Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- The Los Angeles Clippers own just four wins in this shortened season but they own the Minnesota Timberwolves.

Maurice Taylor returned from a two-game absence to score 20 points and the Clippers used a big third quarter to snap a six-game losing streak with a 99-91 victory over the Timberwolves, defeating them for the second time this season.

The Clippers held a 42-40 lead at the half but looked nothing like the worst team in the league in the third quarter. Los Angeles outscored Minnesota, 26-16, to open a 12-point cushion entering the final period.

The Clippers recorded their lone road win of the season at Minnesota on March 21, 100-83. Their 4-30 mark puts them 1 1/2 games behind the Vancouver Grizzlies for the worst record in the league.

Kevin Garnett tallied 15 points for the Timberwolves, who have lost consecutive games following a four-game winning streak. Minnesota posted a 95-73 victory over the Clippers on February 14.

"They played their hearts out tonight, and they beat us," Garnett said. "They have pride and they mess up other teams' record and seasons. I don't think they're gonna lay down to anyone, and I think they'll finish the season strong."

With the scored tied, 46-46, the Clippers reeled off seven straight points. Sherman Douglas hit a driving layup, rookie Michael Olowokandi hap a tip-in and Eric Piatkowski drained a 3-pointer, giving the Clippers a 53-46 advantage with 7 1/2 minutes left in the third quarter.

Douglas added 16 points on 7-of-11 shooting as the Clippers shot 49 percent (37-of-75).

"Today we felt real good before the game, everyone showed signs of readiness," Douglas said. "The fact that we got Mo Taylor back was a major key. He always scores for us and tonight he came up big."

The Clippers still led 60-53 after Lorenzen Wright made a pair of free throws and they finished the period by scoring eight of the final 11 points to open a 68-56 cushion.

Olowokandi converted a hook shot, giving the Clippers their biggest lead of the contest at 72-59 with 10:38 left. Olowokandi finished with 10 points and eight rebounds.

Holding an 86-74 lead, the Clippers did everything in their power to blow the lead but managed to hold on. A 12-3 run by the Wolves brought them within 91-88 with 50 seconds remaining after former Clipper James Robinson hit two free throws.

But Taylor, who missed the last two games with tendinitis in his Achillies, converted a pair of foul shots to give the Clippers a 93-88 cushion with 33 seconds left. After former Clipper Malik Sealy missed a jumper for Minnesota, rookie Tyrone Nesby's dunk sealed the win.

"We defended the basket well, and were the aggressors in the fourth quarter this time," Taylor said. "That proved to be a major reason for the win."

Minnesota shot 42 percent (36-of-85) from the floor.
