Game Story

SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- Karl Malone scored a season-high 38 points and the Utah Jazz struggled for most of the game before turning it on down the stretch for a 92-85 victory over the Golden State Warriors.

Bimbo Coles sank a jumper to give the Warriors, who led most of the way, an 81-80 advantage with 3:31 remaining.

But Jeff Hornacek hit a pair of free throws 12 seconds later to trigger a 7-0 run. Bryon Russell drilled a 3-pointer and Malone hit a short jumper to push the lead to 87-81 with 1:32 to play.

Coles and Chris Mills had baskets to narrow Utah's lead to 87-85 with 45 seconds to go before John Stockton hit a pair of free throws with 28 seconds to play, sealing the win.

"We are starting on our first really tough stretch of this weird season and we can't afford to let down mentally," Stockton said. "Physically we will be all right, it's the mental part of the game that is toughest."

Malone connected on 10-of-22 shots. He did most of his damage at the line, making 18-of-19 attempts as he surpassed his season high of 35 points at Golden State on February 12.

"The thing that's kind of neat about this game is the way we didn't give up," Malone said. "We never could seem to get a handle on them and our bench really came in and saved our butts again."

Russell added 15 points as the Jazz swept three games from the Warriors this season and beat them for the 11th straight time overall since a 93-82 defeat at Golden State on April 14, 1996. Utah has won 16 of the last 17 meetings between the teams.

Coles scored 20 points and Mills added 18 for Golden State, which lost for the fourth time in its last five games while falling three games behind Phoenix for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

The Warriors took their biggest lead of the contest at 31-21 with 9:19 left in the second quarter after Mills made a free throw. Utah answered with a 16-6 surge, capped by two free throws from Greg Ostertag to knot the score at 37-37 with 2:42 to play before the half.

"We have to play our best basketball to beat that club. I guess that's why they are the Western Division Champions," Coles said. "Yeah, we had a 10-point lead but that's in the first half and you know you've got to play 48 minutes."

But Golden State closed the half strong and held a 46-41 advantage. The Warriors led by no more than five points in the third quarter and the score was even, 68-68 heading into the final quarter.

Fueled by Malone, the Jazz made 39-of-47 attempts from the free throw line. Golden State finished just 16-of-20 from the line.

"Our goal tonight was to make a lot of free throws and concentrate," Russell said. "We knew they were a team that fouled a lot and if we could hit our free throws we could come away with a win."

Malone also grabbed 12 rebounds helping the Jazz to a 46-27 edge on the boards.
