Game Story

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (Ticker) -- One night after beating the best team in the league, the Seattle SuperSonics lost to one of the worst.

Shareef Abdur-Rahim scored 28 points and the Vancouver Grizzlies snapped a five-game losing streak with a 98-93 victory over Seattle, only the second win in team history against the SuperSonics.

"I think this gives our team some confidence," Abdur-Rahim said. "It makes us feel good about the good things we've been doing but haven't been getting the rewards for. It makes us feel good about ourselves."

Rookie Felipe Lopez matched a season high with 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds for the Grizzlies, who also ended a seven-game losing streak to the Sonics. Seattle, which fell to 4-13 on the road, still leads the all-time series, 12-2.

"I played a little bit inspired because they're here," said Lopez about playing in front of his family. "I wanted to perform well but at the same time do what the team asks me to do. I think I'll have to move them there."

Reserve Dale Ellis scored 20 points and Gary Payton had 13 and 12 assists to lead the Sonics, who could not build on Thursday's win over league-leading Portland as they lost to the second-worst team in the NBA.

Seattle has dropped five of its last seven, falling one game under .500 and into eighth place in the Western Conference. It is the latest in a season in which the Sonics have been below break-even since they were 23-24 on February 3, 1992.

The Sonics held a 54-47 advantage with 8:47 left in the third quarter after Hersey Hawkins, who scored 17 points, hit a driving layup.

But Cherokee Parks sank an 18-footer and Lopez made a layup, fueling a 16-5 spurt that put the Grizzlies ahead 63-60 with 2:18 left in the period. Parks tallied five of his nine points in the surge.

Vancouver led by five points after three quarters and opened the final period with a 13-3 burst, taking its biggest lead at 82-67 with 6:43 remaining after Michael Smith's dunk.

However, the Sonics used a 21-8 surge to close to 90-88 with 90 seconds remaining after Hawkins nailed a 3-pointer.

The teams traded baskets before Terry Dehere, who was claimed off waivers earlier this season, drained a 26-footer as the shot-clock expired to give the Grizzlies a 95-90 advantage with 16 seconds left.

John Crotty answered with a 3-pointer for Seattle, but Abdur-Rahim made 1-of-2 free throws with nine seconds left to make it 96-93. Lopez grabbed the rebound on Abdur-Rahim's miss and was fouled. He converted both foul shots to seal the win.

"All season long the bounces have just not gone our way," Hawkins said. "Every road game teams seem to be coming up with the plays and we're not."

Abdur-Rahim connected on 10-of-20 shots and also grabbed 11 rebounds. The Grizzlies shot 50 percent (37-of-74) and held a 45-43 rebounding edge.

In his second game back since returning from a thumb injury, Vin Baker had 15 points and 11 rebounds for Seattle.
