Game Story

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- The Atlanta Hawks are losing players almost as frequently as they are losing games.

Already without injured starters Steve Smith and LaPhonso Ellis and suspended reserve Anthony Johnson, the Hawks lost forward Alan Henderson in a 91-84 setback to the Milwaukee Bucks that cost them fifth place in the Eastern Conference.

Dell Curry scored 12 of his 20 points on 3-pointers, including a clutch long-range shot that squelched a late rally by the Hawks, who suffered their fourth straight loss.

The Bucks (21-16) snapped a two-game skid and moved percentage points ahead Atlanta (22-17) into fifth place in the East. The Hawks are just one-half game ahead of the New York Knicks.

"It was a big tiebreaking victory for us, even though it was not a pretty game," Bucks coach George Karl said. "The guys played well and showed guts."

Henderson fell on his backside and suffered a bruised tailbone on a dunk late in the second quarter. He was off to a quick start with 10 points and reserve Grant Long picked up some of the slack with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Smith and Ellis are on the injured list with a sprained knee and a hernia, respectively. Johnson was serving a one-game suspension for elbowing Cleveland guard Bob Sura in the face in Saturday's game. Atlanta fell to 0-2 against Milwaukee this season.

Dikembe Mutombo collected 21 points and 11 rebounds and Mookie Blaylock scored 18 points for the Hawks, who have been held to 85 points or less in 10 straight games.

Glenn Robinson and Ray Allen scored 18 points apiece for the Bucks, who shot 51 percent (37-of-72) from the field and took control for good with a 12-0 burst in the third quarter.

"We had lulls in the game but when we played well, we put runs together that took Atlanta's wind away," Allen said.

Tim Thomas scored six of his seven points in the run, which turned a 54-52 deficit into a 10-point lead. His turnaround jumper capped the spurt at 62-54 with 4:30 left in the period.

"The run in the third quarter helped us out tonight," Robinson said. "We needed to pull away at the end. This was a must win and we took care of business at home."

The Hawks closed to 67-66 entering the fourth quarter but blew a handful of chances to take the lead. Thomas made a foul shot, Ervin Johnson scored off a goaltending call and Curry drilled a 3-pointer for a 73-68 bulge with 8:56 left.

It was never a one-possession game thereafter for Atlanta, which cut the deficit to three four times, only to see Milwaukee answer with points on each occasion. The last time came with 4:01 remaining, when Curry's 3-pointer gave the Bucks an 82-76 advantage.

"We were right there and we failed to execute a few times," Hawks coach Lenny Wilkens said. "We let Ray Allen pick up two loose balls and we left the 3-point shooters open. Instead of being one or two points down, we fell down six."

Milwaukee sealed the win by making 7-of-8 free throws in the final 48 seconds.

Haywoode Workman had nine points and a season-high 11 assists for the Bucks, who committed just 12 turnovers and made 6-of-17 3-pointers. Johnson pulled down eight rebounds.

Ed Gray scored 12 points for the Hawks, who shot 42 percent (35-of-83) and held a 43-32 rebounding advantage but committed 16 turnovers and shot just 4-of-20 from behind the arc.

Neither team led by more than five points in the first half, which ended in a 48-48 tie. Mutmombo scored 13 points for the Hawks and Curry contributed 12 for the Bucks.
