Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- Antonio McDyess scored 36 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as the Denver Nuggets exploded for their highest offensive output of the season in a 120-97 pounding of the New Jersey Nets.

McDyess scored 14 points in the first half as the Nuggets took control with a 22-6 run to close the second quarter and open a 61-47 lead. Denver led by as many as 28 points in the second half.

"In the beginning, they weren't doubling. In the end, they started but at that point it was too late," said McDyess, who hit 15-of-24 shots. "This game we were pushing the ball, guys were running and we were able to get easy baskets."

Chauncey Billups added 26 points and Danny Fortson had 18 and 17 rebounds for Denver, whose previous high for points this season was in a 117-113 overtime victory over the Los Angeles Lakers.

"We were able to sustain the lead that we built early and that's the sign of a maturing team," Billups said. "We lacked intensity the other night against Golden State and we learned from that and came out tonight with a lot of intensity."

Denver has won has won 13 of the last 14 meetings with the Nets at McNichols Arena.

Stephon Marbury had 25 points and 10 assists and Keith Van Horn also scored 25 points for New Jersey, which has lost four of five following a season-high four-game winning streak.

The Nets took their last lead of the contest at 41-39 with 6:21 to play in the first half after Kerry Kittles, who went 2-of-13 from the floor, made a pair of foul shots.

Fortson converted two free throws, Billups hit a 19-footer and Eric Washington drilled a 3-pointer, fueling the 22-6 spurt to close the half. Johnny Taylor, who scored nine of his 12 points in the first half, capped the surge with a rare four-point play with 1:04 left before intermission.

Denver shot an impressive 55 percent (23-of-42) from the floor in the opening half and finished the game with the same mark, hitting 42-of-77 shots.

The Nuggets led by double digits throughout the second half and took their biggest lead at 109-81 with 6:17 remaining after McDyess sank a pair of free throws.

Van Horn made 11-of-18 attempts from the floor as the Nets shot 45 percent (39-of-86).

"We need to watch film of our blowout wins and tonight's game to see what the difference is," Van Horn said. "I think it will be noticeable on tape. The key to winning in this league is to stop guys who shouldn't be scoring 20 points a night. That's what kills you."

Kendall Gill added 18 points for New Jersey.
