Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- Hakeem Olajuwon scored 27 points -- all in the first three quarters -- as the Houston Rockets remained perfect at home against the Vancouver Grizzlies with a 102-85 romp.

The Rockets trailed by two points after the first quarter but seized control by outscoring Vancouver, 57-40, over the middle two periods.

Rookie Bryce Drew added a career-high 18 points and Sam Mack also finished with 18 for the Rockets, who swept three games from the Grizzlies this season while improving to 8-0 all-time against them at home.

Houston moved one game ahead of the fourth-place Los Angeles Lakers in the Western Conference.

Shareef-Abdur Rahim and Tony Massenburg scored 16 points apiece for Vancouver, which has lost three straight and 13 of its last 15 games. At 7-32, the Grizzlies have the second-worst record in the NBA, better only than the Los Angeles Clippers.

"They basically did a better job on everything," Abdur-Rahim said. "They had a good transition game and got a lot of easy baskets."

The Grizzlies actually got off to good start, taking their biggest lead at 21-11 with 4:03 left in the first period on rookie Felipe Lopez's driving layup.

However, the Rockets scored the final eight points of the period. Olajuwon had 15 points in the quarter on 6-of-6 shooting. He finished 8-of-13 from the floor and also grabbed 12 rebounds.

Houston grabbed its biggest lead of the first half at 40-33 with 3 1/2 minutes left before intermission after Drew nailed a 3-pointer. The Rockets held a 44-38 advantage at the half.

Drew and Mack each sank 4-of-5 shots from 3-point range as the Rockets connected on 10-of-21 shots from beyond the arc. Houston shot 54 percent (38-of-70) overall.

"I thought we shot the ball extremely well tonight," Houston coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "Our bench came in and did a great job. It was great to see Bryce (Drew) have a great game. He's starting to build his confidence and hit the 3's, which we thought was his strength when we got him."

The Rockets put away the game early in the third. After Lopez made a layup to bring the Grizzlies within 46-42, Olajuwon hit two free throws and rookie Cuttino Mobley had a dunk to trigger a 13-5 surge that pushed the lead to 59-47 with 6:50 left in the period.

Olajuwon reached a milestone with 4:07 left in third when he drained a 15-footer, becoming the eighth player in NBA history with 10,000 career field goals.

"I didn't even know about that," Olajuwon said. "When I made that jumper on the baseline and they made that announcement, I was pleasantly surprised. It's another milestone and accomplishment for me."

A layup by Othella Harrington with 8:12 remaining capped a 10-2 spurt and gave the Rockets their biggest lead of the contest at 86-65. The closest the Grizzlies got the rest of the way was 94-81 with 3:09 left after a basket by Pete Chilcutt.

Harrington contributed 12 points and nine rebounds, helping the Rockets' reserves outscore Vancouver's bench, 50-23.

Vancouver shot 40 percent (31-of-77) and was outrebounded, 40-33.

"I thought after our initial run, we did a poor job of executing offensively during the second quarter," Vancouver coach Brian Hill said. "Their bench really hurt us tonight. Sam Mack and Bryce Drew hit a lot of 3-point shots for them."
