Game Story

SAN ANTONIO (Ticker) -- David Robinson and Tim Duncan posted double-doubles as the red-hot San Antonio Spurs rolled to a 95-79 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves, who played without Kevin Garnett.

Robinson had 21 points and 15 rebounds while Duncan contributed 16 and 10 for the Spurs, who have won 20 of their last 24 games. San Antonio maintained a one-game lead over fourth-place Houston in the Western Conference. The Spurs, who have won seven straight home games, trail first-place Utah by 3 1/2 games in the Midwest Division.

"We have to face Utah, Portland and the Lakers to see how we match up," said Spurs guard Steve Kerr. "We have to test ourselves against the best. We have some momentum now and I am confident that we will play well."

Bobby Jackson scored 14 points and James Robinson added 13 for Minnesota, which leads Seattle by 1 1/2 games for the sixth spot in the West. Garnett was hospitalized in Minneapolis for flu-like symptoms and missed his first contest since December 11, 1996, ending a streak of 181 consecutive games.

"We simply didn't have enough bullets," said Wolves coach Flip Saunders. "They're too long inside and we couldn't throw enough weapons at them. They just had too much firepower. We are a better team than this tonight, we were just undermanned."

The teams have split four meetings this season.

The Timberwolves used a 9-2 run to close within 52-47 on a driving layup by Jackson with 8:13 left in the third quarter. But Sean Elliott had a short jumper before Duncan and David Robinson had baskets to push the lead to 11.

Avery Johnson hit 1-of-2 free throws, and after a basket by Malik Sealy pulled the Wolves within 59-49, David Robinson and Duncan threw down dunks off feeds from Jerome Kersey and Steve Kerr hit a 22-footer to give San Antonio a 65-49 cushion with 2:49 to go.

A 10-footer by Gerard King gave the Spurs their largest lead at 95-73 with 96 seconds to play.

"It was a good win for us tonight," said Johnson. "It was good because our bench got a lot of minutes for us. We know these next couple of games we are going to need a whole team."

Sam Mitchell, starting in place of Garnett, clearly looked out of place in the early going and missed his first three shots. His lay-in, though, pulled the Wolves within 10-8 at the 6:37 mark.

But Duncan triggered a 9-0 run with a pair of free throws as the Spurs grabbed a 19-8 advantage with 3:51 left in the first quarter on a layup by Johnson. A 3-pointer by James Robinson pulled Minnesota within 28-24, but the Spurs countered with a 10-2 surge to open a 38-26 advantage on a 19-footer by Kerr.

Antonio Daniels finished with 10 points off the bench on 5-of-7 shooting for the Spurs, who shot 51 percent (40-of-79) from the field and outrebounded the Wolves 47-39. They outscored Minnesota 48-30 and had 19 fast-break points.

Mitchell was 3-of-12 from the field and Joe Smith hit only 2-of-12 for Minnesota, which shot 38 percent (30-of-80) from the floor. The T-Wolves committed 19 turnovers that led to 29 points for the Spurs.

"It makes it difficult," said Wolves forward Tom Hammonds about playing without Garnett. "Especially without any practice time to make adjustments. But we've really got no excuses. We played the best we could, we just missed a lot of shots."
