Game Story

MILWAUKEE (Ticker) -- David Wesley sank a pair of free throws with 2.1 seconds remaining as the resurgent Charlotte Hornets extended their winning streak to a season-high six games with a 95-94 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks.

Wesley received an inbounds pass from Bobby Phills and beat Haywoode Workman to the basket, drawing a foul. An 80 percent free throw shooter, Wesley calmly stepped to the line and drained the winning shots.

Following pair of timeouts, the Bucks had a last chance to win. But Elden Campbell knocked away Michael Curry's inbounds pass from mid-court under the Milwaukee basket as time expired.

Eddie Jones scored 23 points and Phills added 20 for the Hornets, who are in the midst of their longest winning streak since reeling off 10 straight victories from February 21-March 13, 1998. Charlotte also pulled within two games of New York for the final Eastern Conference playoff berth.

"This team doesn't quit and we're not that old," Jones said. "We always know we can fight. We know we had to get going and turn up the defense and get easy baskets in transition."

"We really hung tough tonight," added Charlotte coach Paul Silas. "Good teams make runs and we made a lot of good shots tonight. We always say, `Hang tough and we could get it.' If we get to .500, we can start thinking playoffs."

Ray Allen had 21 points for Milwaukee, which had a four-game home winning streak stopped. The Bucks fell to sixth in the Eastern Conference, half-game behind Detroit and one game back of Atlanta.

"We didn't put pressure on them offensively when we were going to the hole," Allen said. "We didn't have them on their heels. You don't want to leave the game to the officials at the end. The ball didn't bounce our way, so we didn't get the call. You have to take care of every game in the playoff race, which we didn't do tonight."

The Bucks seemed to be in control after Allen drained a 3-pointer with 9 1/2 minutes left that gave Milwaukee its biggest lead, 83-72.

But Phills converted a three-point play and, after Robinson made a jumper, the Hornets scored the next six points from the free throw line to close to 85-81 with 5:52 remaining.

Charlotte made 14-of-16 free throw attempts in the fourth quarter and finished 29-of-40 from the line.

The Hornets got even at 89-89 with 4:03 to play after Phills, who scored 11 points in the final period, nailed a 3-pointer. He was 5-of-9 from 3-point range but missed all four of his shots from inside the arc.

Workman drilled a 19-footer to put the Bucks up by two before Wesley tied it with a pair of free throws. Campbell made two foul shots to put the Hornets ahead, 93-91, but the Bucks got back the lead with 1:57 left on Ervin Johnson's three-point play.

Charlotte held a 52-47 halftime advantage behind 15 points from Jones, who went 8-of-17 from the floor.

But fueled by 11 points from Allen and seven from Robinson, the Bucks outscored Charlotte, 31-16, in the third quarter and took a 78-68 advantage heading into the final period.

Allen and Robinson combined for 29 points in the first three quarters but were held to only six in the fourth.

Milwaukee shot 48 percent (36-of-75), while the Hornets finished at 43 percent (29-of-67) from the floor.

The teams split the four-game season series, each winning twice on the road.
