Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- The Miami Heat may have been watching the clock, but Reggie Miller was not.

The Heat squandered nearly all of an eight-point lead in the last 2 1/2 minutes but held on for a crucial 92-88 victory over the Indiana Pacers when Miller missed a rushed 3-pointer in the final seconds.

Alonzo Mourning totaled 24 points and 16 rebounds and reserve Clarence Weatherspoon spearheaded a decisive fourth-quarter run for the Heat, who vaulted past the Pacers into second place in the Eastern Conference.

"This game had a lot of significance," said Mourning, who had his 25th double-double of the season. "This game will definitely make a difference, especially with the (playoff) positioning. It's all about who wins the most games and who stays rock solid over next 10 or 11 games."

Miller scored 17 points but made only 5-of-17 shots. One of the best clutch shooters in the NBA, he made a pair of baskets to begin Indiana's late comeback. But with the Pacers trailing by two, he appeared to lose track of time and launched a 3-pointer from well behind the circle with just under 10 seconds to go.

"It was a fantastic look," Miller said. "I was even more surprised that I was open, especially the way they were playing me all day. I was expecting to have someone in my face. To be that wide open is a little shocking, especially on the road."

"He got beat up pretty good out there," Pacers coach Larry Bird said. "There was some holding going on out there. We got the ball in his hands with the game on the line and unfortunately the ball did not go in."

P.J. Brown grabbed the rebound and was fouled with three seconds left. His two free throws gave him 16 points and sealed the win for Miami (26-13), which snapped a two-game losing streak and split the four-game season series with Indiana.

Antonio Davis started at center for flu-ridden Rik Smits and had 18 points and 12 rebounds for the Pacers (26-15), who still lead the Central Division but are third in the East behind Orlando and Miami.

"We came out a little flat in the third and were late on our assignments," Davis said. "They're a a great team, a physical team, and they're well-coached."

Indiana withstood a third-quarter surge by Miami and grabbed a 76-74 lead on a 3-pointer by Sam Perkins with 9:02 remaining. Weatherspoon scored all of his seven points in a 9-0 surge over the next 3 1/2 minutes, giving the Heat an 83-76 lead.

"We simply had a great second half," Heat coach Pat Riley said. "The energy in the second half was double and we needed all of that just to be in there at the end. Our guys in the second half of this game found the energy and got excited about the possibility of winning."

Miami's advantage was 90-82 after a basket by Terry Porter with 2:33 left. Miller made two straight hoops and Jalen Rose sank a pair of free throws after an exchange of turnovers, pulling Indiana within 90-88 with 29 seconds left.

Porter and Jamal Mashburn scored 14 points apiece for the Heat, who shot 45 percent (37-of-82) from the field and committed a season-low seven turnovers. Miami made 16-of-18 free throws.

The Heat won despite a poor shooting game from star guard Tim Hardaway, who had 12 points and nine assists but made just 5-of-17 shots.

Rose scored 16 points and Perkins added 15 for the Pacers, who shot under 40 percent (31-of-78) from the field and held a 43-40 rebounding advantage. Dale Davis grabbed 13 rebounds. Indiana made 10-of-25 3-pointers and also sank 16-of-18 free throws.

Despite the absence of the 7-4 Smits, the Heat struggled early, missing 13 of their first 15 shots as the Pacers jumped to an 11-4 lead. They led 25-18 after one quarter and 50-43 at the half, with Perkins scoring 12 points and Antonio Davis 11.

"We seemed flat and unenthusiastic in the first half and we were fortunate to be down only by seven," Riley said.

Miller's jumper opened the third quarter but Miami rattled off the next 13 points, taking a 56-52 lead on a jumper by Hardaway with 7:03 left in the period. Brown scored six points in the burst.

"In the first half, we shot the ball extremely well," Bird said. "In the second half, we stagnated and got a little frustrated because we had the lead taken away."
