Game Story

SAN ANTONIO (Ticker) -- Mario Elie's 3-pointer with one tenth of a second left gave the San Antonio Spurs their third straight victory as they rallied from a 23-point deficit to defeat the Houston Rockets, 86-83.

Avery Johnson drove into the lane and passed to David Robinson at the top of the key. Robinson kicked the ball out to an open Elie on the right side, who buried the shot to beat his former team.

Elie scored the final eight points for San Antonio. He finished with 21, two shy of his season high, and drained all four of his 3-pointers. Sean Elliott netted 16 points whle David Robinson had 14 and 14 rebounds.

"I just wanted to go out and play my game," Elie said. "Hopefully, I have another one of those shots in me during the playoffs because the regular season is just the regular season.

"I didn't even see him get the pass," Spurs forward Tim Duncan said. "David had the ball and I thought he was going to shoot. I went to the boards and I didn't see a shot go up. It was a great shot."

The Spurs hold a two-game lead over the Rockets for second place in the Midwest Division.

"I don't think the shot was designated for Mario," Rockets forward Scottie Pippen said. "We just didn't continue to rotate when he made a good pass and that gave Mario a chance to really set up and get a good look at the basket."

Elie began his barrage by draining a 3-pointer with 1:42 left to tie the game at 81. After Houston's Charles Barkley hit two free throws, Elie tied it again as his jumper was goaltended by Hakeem Olajuwon with 45 seconds to go.

Pippen missed a 25-footer for the Rockets, setting up Elie's game-winner.

Barkley had 23 points, 15 rebounds and eight assists for Houston, which had its three-game winning streak snapped and fell to 0-3 against San Antonio this season. Hakeem Olajuwon added 18 points and 11 rebounds.

Houston jumped in front early, scoring nine straight points to go ahead 13-4 with 7:44 left in the first quarter. Barkley punctuated the spurt by hitting a 3-pointer.

The Rockets were not finished as they closed the period with an 11-3 run and took a 31-13 lead. Barkley scored five in that spurt and finished the quarter with 15.

The Rockets opened a 36-13 lead on Matt Bullard's 3-pointer with 10:37 left in the first half. But San Antonio outscored Houston 27-8 the remainder of the half as Elie and Robinson each scored six points. Barkley was held scoreless in the second quarter as Houston held a 44-40 lead.

"You take them five to six points at a time," Robinson said. "It was good to be down four at half after being down 23."

San Antonio went on a 10-2 run to gain a 52-48 advantage with 8:26 remaining in the third quarter. Elie and Elliott each hit 3-pointers in that binge.

Houston used a 12-5 third-quarter run to open a 66-60 lead with 1:44 left. Rookie Michael Dickerson scored four points during that spurt.
