Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Dan Majerle scored a season-high 22 points and the Miami Heat moved closer to the top spot in the Eastern Conference standings with a 94-87 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Averaging just 6.7 points per game, Majerle scored 13 points in the third quarter, helping the Heat to a 72-66 advantage. He finished 8-of-11 from the field and 5-of-7 from 3-point range.

"I got my 3-pointers off the drives and double teams," Majerle said. "Alonzo (Mourning) and P.J. (Brown) both did a good job of finding me. We knew what the Cavs wanted to do. We just had to be patient and find the open guy."

Jamal Mashburn tallied 23 points and Alonzo Mourning added 19, nine blocked shots and seven rebounds for the Heat (27-13), who have won eight of their last 10 games to pull within one game of the Orlando Magic (29-13) for the best record in the East.

Miami won for the fifth straight time in Cleveland and ninth time in the last 10 meetings overall.

Shawn Kemp matched a season high with 32 points and also grabbed 10 rebounds for Cleveland (21-20), which has lost consecutive games following a three-game winning streak.

The Cavaliers fell to eighth place in the East, one-half game in front of New York, Charlotte and Toronto for the final playoff berth in the Eastern Conference.

Miami held a three-point advantage early in the third quarter until Mashburn scored six consecutive points, P.J. Brown hit a jumper and Majerle drained a 3-pointer to push the lead to 60-50 with 7:02 remaining in the period.

Mashburn went 8-of-18 from the floor as the Heat shot 50 percent (29-of-58).

Majerle, a former Cav, scored eight more points in the period as the Heat maintained their lead. Majerle went 5-of-6 from the floor in the period, including his only shot from beyond the arc.

"We got a hot hand out of Danny and that opened up the game for us," Miami coach Pat Riley said. "Dan's role is that of a defender. As a passer and a screener, he balances the floor. He got open tonight and made some shots."

The Cavs were able to close to 70-66 late in the third quarter but could get no closer and trailed by six entering the final period.

The Heat put away the game early in the fourth quarter, opening the period on a 10-3 surge capped by Clarence Weatehspoon's dunk to take their biggest lead at 82-69 with 7:02 remaining. Weatherspoon scored all six of his points in the burst. The closest Cleveland got thereafter was five points with 20 seconds left.

Kemp was the offense for the Cavs, going 14-of-29 from the floor. As a team, Cleveland shot 44 percent (36-of-81).

Andrew DeClercq added 14 points and Brevin Knight handed out 11 assists for Cleveland, which will face the Heat twice more in the next week, including Wednesday in Miami.

"We could've had Miami three times at the beginning of the year, instead we wound up with them three times at the end," commented Cleveland coach Mike Fratello. "That's the way the draw came and it's something we have to deal with."
