Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- Charles Barkley got three the hard way. Sam Mack got three the easy way.

Barkley's three-point play and Mack's seventh 3-pointer just 26 seconds apart broke open a close game and gave the Houston Rockets a 120-113 victory over the slumping Seattle SuperSonics.

The teams combined for 22 3-pointers, including one of four by Dale Ellis that pulled Seattle within 108-104 with 2:36 to go. Hakeem Olajuwon missed a short hook, but Barkley muscled inside Detlef Schrempf for the offensive rebound and scored as he was fouled. His free throw gave Houston a seven-point lead.

"It was just a lucky play," Barkley said. "I was in the right place at the right time."

"He definitely moved me out of the way," Schrempf said. "Charles does that all the time and gets away with it. The ref was standing right there. I had him boxed out and he pushed me out of the way and that was it. He gets away with it and we don't -- that's the bottom line."

On the next possession, Mack drilled a 3-pointer to boost the lead to 114-104 with 1:48 remaining. Mack scored 21 points off the bench, all on 3-pointers as he shot 7-of-11 from behind the arc.

"Sam Mack came off the bench and lit it up," Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich said.

"When they double-team like that, you've got to make them pay," Mack said. "Rudy keeps telling me not to pass but keep shooting the ball. When you get on a roll like that, it feels like the basket is huge."

Barkley scored 13 of his 25 points in the fourth quarter and added 10 rebounds and seven assists for the Rockets, who have won four of their last five games. Houston (27-14) moved within 1 1/2 games of San Antonio for third place in the Western Conference.

"When they double me and I'm going to pass it and when they don't, I'm going to go 1-on-1," Barkley said. "It's simple basketball."

"Charles put on an exhibition on what to do in the low post if you get double-teamed or if you play him 1-on-1," Tomjanovich said. "He was phenomenal."

Gary Payton had 23 points, 15 assists and seven rebounds for the SuperSonics, who have lost three in a row and nine of 13. Seattle is just one-half game ahead of Sacramento in the race for the final playoff berth in the West.

"They hit big shots and we didn't rotate," Payton said. "They hit the big shots at the right time. Mack hit a couple of 3s and then Charles went to work. We could have come from behind but with our tired bodies, we just couldn't get it done."

"If we can play that well every night, we're going to make the playoffs," Sonics coach Paul Westphal said. "To come up with that kind of performance after our fifth game in six nights makes me very proud of my team."

Olajuwon moved past Jerry west into 11th place on the all-time scoring list with 25,200 points. He finished with 24 points and nine rebounds and passed West with one of his patented hooks with 1:16 left in the third quarter.

Schrempf had a season-high 28 points and 13 rebounds and Ellis added 22 points, also a season high. Seattle was without forward Vin Baker, who sat out with a sore right knee. Houston played without reserve forward Othella Harrington, who underwent toe surgery earlier in the day.

The Rockets shot 55 percent (46-of-83) from the field in their best offensive output of the season. They made 13-of-27 3-pointers while the Sonics sank 9-of-23.

Scottie Pippen scored 12 of his 22 points in the first quarter as Houston raced to a 34-29 lead. Mack began and ended a 12-0 run with 3-pointers, giving the Rockets a 46-31 lead with 5:57 left in the second quarter.

Houston led by as much as 16 points before settling for a 56-45 halftime lead. Payton, limited to two points in the first half, scored 17 in the third quarter as Seattle closed to 84-79 entering the final 12 minutes.
