Game Story

ANAHEIM (Ticker) -- Rookie Jason Williams scored 19 points and handed out a season-high 14 assists as the Sacramento Kings rallied for a 102-98 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers.

Corliss Williamson scored 23 points for Sacramento (19-22), which moved into a tie with Seattle for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference. The Sonics suffered a 120-113 loss at Houston.

"It's a huge, huge win for us," Sacramento coach Rick Adelman said. "I don't think we shot the ball well. We weren't playing with energy. The last five mintues we turned it up on defense. Now we're tied in eighth with nine games to go.

"Every win is a good win right now," added Williams. "Every win will be a confidence builder. We can't worry about Seattle or Phoenix out there. We can only worry about the Sacramento Kings."

Trailing 93-86 with 4:25 to play, the Kings finally seemed to wake up after a disjointed and lackluster performance over the first 3 1/2 quarters.

Williamson converted a three-point play that capped a 9-1 run, giving the Kings a 95-94 lead with 1:23 remaining. But Maurice Taylor, who led the Clippers with 24 points, put Los Angeles back in front with a short jumper in the lane with 1:07 left.

"This team is learning what to do," said Adelman. "If we play like we did in the first half we shouldn't show for the playoffs. They have to learn to play all 48 minutes."

Vlade Divac made a layup to put the Kings ahead for good with 58 seconds to go and then preserved the victory with a steal at the other end and a crucial rebound of Vernon Maxwell's missed 3-point attempt with 16.7 seconds left.

Williams and Maxwell each made a pair at the line to close out the victory, giving the Kings their first road win over the Clippers since April 11, 1995.

Sacramento had lost seven straight road games against Los Angeles, including a 106-92 setback on March 11 that snapped the Clippers season-opening 17-game losing streak.

Chris Webber scored 22 points but only grabbed six rebounds, failing to record a double-double for just the fifth time in 38 games.

"We stole this one," Webber said. "The Clips played well. If I was in their locker room, I'd be upset. It's a great win, especially with Seattle losing."

Tariq Abdul-Wahad collected 12 points and Divac added 10 for Sacramento, which shot 48 percent (42-of-87) and held a 42-41 edge on the boards.

Tyrone Nesby scored 16 points and, Lamond Murray had 14 and Sherman Douglas added 12 for the Clippers, who shot 46 percent (42-of-92) and committed 17 turnovers.

"The guys played hard again," Los Angeles coach Chris Ford said. "A lot of good things were needed to execute in the long stretch, and we made some big plays on the offensive end. It's just disappointing because our guys worked so hard.

Douglas, who missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer in Sunday's 103-101 loss to Denver, had a pair of chances to knot tonight's contest in the waning moments.

After Maxwell's free throws with 11 seconds left gave Sacramento a 101-98 lead, Douglas missed a 26-footer from the right sideline but tracked down the rebound in the corner. He attempted another 3-pointer while falling out of bounds, but came up several feet short of the rim as the Kings recovered the loose ball.

Divac made 1-of-2 from the stripe with seven-tenths of a second left. sealing the win.
