Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- Rookie Vince Carter celebrated his return to Florida with 24 points as the Toronto Raptors climbed into a tie for the final Eastern Conference playoff spot with a 95-88 victory over the Orlando Magic.

After Orlando sliced a 10-point deficit to two in the final minute, Carter hit a jumper with 44 seconds remaining and Dee Brown added two foul shots 18 seconds later to give the Raptors an 89-83 lead.

"It's cool being home, but I was more focused on the game," said Carter, a native of Daytona Beach. "This was crucial to our season. That's what's most important to me."

Toronto won for the fourth time in five games, tying the New York Knicks for the final spot in the East's jumbled playoff race.

Darrell Armstrong, Bo Outlaw and rookie Michael Doleac scored 16 points apiece for the Magic, who have dropped four straight and six of their last seven games.

Orlando fell 1 1/2 games behind Miami in the race for the top spot in the East following its second straight home loss. That promped Penny Hardaway and Horace Grant to call a closed-door postgamemeeting, although Hardaway insisted there was no yelling or screaming in the locker room.

"We didn't need any shouting at all," he said. "Everybody was willing to listen. We weren't in a postion to shout at each other. We were just trying to figure out some stuff and hopefully, we did."

For the second straight night, the Magic started strongly, jumping out to an early 9-2 advantage. But the Raptors quickly erased the deficit, taking a 14-13 lead on Doug Christie's 3-pointer with 1:19 left in the first quarter.

"We've lost six of seven games and we shouldn't have, especially the two in a row at home," Hardaway said. "Tonight, we had no intensity. Knowing how important that game was, there's a little sense of panic. If you lose any more, you can go from third to sixth."

Brown and Christie each made four 3-pointers for the Raptors, who were 11-of-21 from beyond the arc. Orlando was just 2-of-13 from 3-point range.

"We started off slow, but got back into it," said Brown, who scored 18 points. "We got the crowd out of the game real quick. We came out and played our game. We took the ball out of the hands we wanted to. Some people hit big shots tonight."

Carter drew praise from Orlando coach Chuck Daly after going 11-of-23 from the field, including a number of key baskets down the stretch.

"Vince Carter will be an All-Star for many years to come," Daly said. "He's almost impossible to guard. He has such lift. I don't think you can guard him with any normal-size guys."

"From day one, the coach (Butch Carter) has put the ball in my hands and said win the game," Carter added. "That's a lot of confidence, especially for a rookie. I have a good relationship with everybody on this team. They believe in me."

Count forward Charles Oakley among the believers.

"They're comparing Vince to Michael (Jordan), but once you've seen him three or four times, you know he's the guy on this team," Oakley said. "At the beginning of the season, we didn't have a franchise player. Now we have one in Vince."

Orlando tied it at 56-56 on Outlaw's foul shot with 2:23 remaining in the third quarter, but Brown hit a 3-pointer to put the Raptors ahead to stay.

After Outlaw's jumper pulled Orlando within 71-69, Brown's 3-pointer ingnited a 9-1 run for the Raptors, who extended the cushion to 80-70 on Carter's layup with 5:32 remaining.

Orlando closed within 85-83 on two free throws by Outlaw with 1:02 to play, but the Raptors closed with a 10-5 spurt.
