Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- David Wesley scored seven of his 19 points during a 22-8 run that closed the third quarter as the Charlotte Hornets got right back on track with a 97-82 pounding of the New Jersey Nets.

Charlotte trailed 59-58 with 9:26 remaining in the third period after New Jersey's Stephon Marbury, who had 30 points and nine assists, converted a layup. But the Hornets outscored the Nets by 14 points over the remainder of the quarter to take an 80-67 advantage entering the fourth.

New Jersey came no closer than nine points over the final 12 minutes.

"We really played hard," said Hornets interim coach Paul Silas. "The second half was a real good half. We did a lot of subtle things like helping on defense. When Marbury is hitting his outside jumper, there's not much you can do about that. But I felt we did a good job shutting everyone else down."

Elden Campbell and Derrick Coleman scored 16 points apiece for the Hornets, whose nine-game winning streak came to an end Friday night in New York. With tonight's victory, Charlotte moved into a tie with the Knicks and Toronto Raptors for the eighth and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

"We played our game tonight and kept them from doing what they wanted to do," said Campbell. "We played smart and we need to do that these next couple of weeks. Every game is critical at this point. If you lose, you could fall two games back. We are fighting for a spot and at this point don't care how we win as long as we win."

Keith Van Horn netted 22 points for the Nets, who lost three games to Charlotte this season by an average of 12 points.

"We got a little stagnant out there tonight," said Nets interim coach Don Casey. "We didn't move the ball as well as we should have. Charlotte is a good team and they played very well tonight."

Following Marbury's layup, Campbell took a feed from Wesley and threw down a dunk, giving the Hornets the lead for good and igniting a 9-0 run. Bobby Phills followed with a pair of free throws, Campbell made one from the line and Phills, who finished with 14 points, converted a layup.

After a miss by Van Horn, Chucky Brown followed his own layup, giving the Hornets a 67-59 advantage with 6:21 left in the quarter.

New Jersey fought within 71-66 on Marbury's 11-footer, but Charlotte scored the next seven points. Wesley and Brown had baskets before Wesley drilled a 3-pointer for a 78-66 edge with 2:03 left. Wesley's driving layup with 1.4 seconds remaining in the quarter gave Charlotte an 80-67 bulge.

"We played defense in spurts and didn't play it the whole game," Marbury said. "Our offense carries over from our defense. When our defense is good, our offense is good. They were just hitting their shots."

A basket by Mark Hendrickson early in the fourth quarter pulled New Jersey within 80-71, but the Hornets quickly put the game away as Chuck Person drained a 3-pointer and Coleman added a short jumper, pushing the advantage to 85-71 with 7:19 to play.

Brown scored 14 points, Campbell grabbed 13 rebounds and Wesley dished out nine assists for Charlotte, which shot 51 percent (39-of-76) and held a 42-38 rebounding advantage. The Hornets turned 20 New Jersey turnovers into 16 points.

"There are a lot of teams competing for that eighth spot," said Wesley. "It's nice to control your own destiny. We responded well tonight. We couldn't afford a hangover and now need to start a new streak."

Jamie Feick had eight rebounds for the Nets, who connected on just 41 percent (33-of-81) of their field goals despite going 6-of-14 from beyond the arc.
