Game Story

SAN ANTONIO (Ticker) -- The red-hot San Antonio Spurs made quick work of the slumping Los Angeles Lakers with another dominating performance at home.

Tim Duncan had 21 points and 13 rebounds as the Spurs routed the Lakers, 108-81, for their sixth straight victory and 11th in a row at home.

"This wasn't a statement game," Duncan said. "Statements come during the playoffs. We just want to play well the rest of the season and let what happens happen. We want to make our statement in the playoffs."

Duncan recorded his 32nd double-double of the season for the Spurs, who have won 25 of their last 29 to pull within two games of the Utah Jazz for the league's best record. The win also snapped San Antonio's six-game losing streak against the Lakers.

David Robinson added 16 points for San Antonio, which broke it open by outscoring the Lakers, 36-23, in the second quarter. The Spurs shot 75 percent (15-of-20) from the field in the period, racing to a 61-46 halftime lead.

"I've been really pleased with the way the team is playing," Robinson said. "It's all about concentration. We go on the road now and they're all tough on the road. I'm not ready to say we're the team to beat, but we are playing better."

The Lakers pulled within 11 early in the second half before the Spurs slowly pulled away en route to their second straight lopsided win. San Antonio drubbed Dallas, 103-76, at home on Thursday.

"It was a great team effort," San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said. "One has to be impressed with their execution at both ends of the court and with everybody on the court. They reacted well with each other on defense. We had five guys who trusted each other."

Shaquille O'Neal had 26 points and 12 rebounds for the Lakers, who have lost five of their last seven and dropped one game behind Houston in the battle for the fourth playoff spot and homecourt advantage in the first round of the postseason.

"They are one of the hottest teams in the league right now," O'Neal said. "They're playing better together and tonight they played with a lot of fire and intensity."

The defeat matched the Lakers' worst loss of the season, a 113-86 setback at Portland on April 13. Los Angeles shot only 44 percent (32-of-73) from the field and scored only 35 points in the second half.

It marked the second straight game in which the Lakers were held below 85 points, having suffered an 88-82 defeat at Portland on Wednesday.

"I was disappointed with the effort," Lakers coach Kurt Rambis said. "They outworked us. We are not going to improve playing that way. The 100-percent, all-the-time effort I expect wasn't there tonight."

Sean Elliott had 14 points and Avery Johnson added 13 for the Spurs, who improved to 28-4 when leading at the half and 28-6 when taking a lead into the final period.

"We are a defensive team," Johnson said. "We've been playing defense all year. Even when we were 6-8, we were still playing defense, we just weren't making shots. Now we are looking for ways to score a little more and a little easier."

"It's hard to single out one individual," Popovich added. "The big guys were super. David's defense on Shaq was great and it set the tone. Tim's offense ... and Sean was great on defense. The shots that were made on him were tough shots."

The Spurs wore down Los Angeles with their depth, outscoring the Lakers, 36-13, off the bench. San Antonio also had a 19-4 edge in fast-break points.

"They're playing very good basketball right now and we're still in a learning process," Rambis said. "There were a few hustle plays that they made that really made a difference."
