Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Jason Kidd overcame a jammed left elbow to record his league-leading sixth triple-double of the season as the Phoenix Suns rolled to a 95-71 victory over the slumping Houston Rockets.

Kidd, who has been bothered by the flu in recent days, bruised his left elbow with 1:30 left in the third quarter when he dove into the press table while chasing a loose ball. But he returned with 9:19 remaining in the final period after X-rays were negative.

"The ball went off my knee," he said. "I was hustling to get it and I slid. It wasn't as bad as it looked. I slid more than I hurt anything and I just hit my elbow on the (television) monitor that was under the table."

Kidd finished with 22 points, 10 rebounds and 14 assists as the Suns posted their sixth straight home win and strengthened their hold on sixth place in the Western Conference. Phoenix opened a 1 1/2-game lead over Sacramento and Minnesota.

"I think when I'm sick, I tend to be more relaxed," Kidd said. "Today, it was a case where I was just trying to keep everything under control. I came here and went to sleep, got out to warm up late and gave it a go. "

Kidd collected his 25th double-double of the season in the first half with 17 points and 10 assists. The talented guard notched his 25th career triple-double and 12th since joining the Suns. Four have come against the Rockets, including two this season.

Phoenix took control early, building a 53-36 cushion at intermission, its largest halftime lead at home this season.

The 71 points allowed represented a season low for the Suns and tied the third-lowest total in franchise history. Phoenix improved to 19-0 all-time when holding an opponent below 80 points.

"I think we've been playing good defense for the last nmonth," Phoenix coach Danny Ainge said. "I think we've done a good job the last few times against Houston. We did a good job defending their interior guys and we did not allow them to get too many easy 3s."

Phoenix shot 49 percent (35-of-72) from the field while holding the Rockets to just 35 percent (26-of-74). The Suns made 7-of-12 3-pointers, compared to just 6-of-26 for Houston.

The Rockets collapsed down the stretch, scoring only two points over the final seven minutes en route to their third straight loss.

"They beat us in every phase of the game," Houston coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "Somewhere, we're gonna have to make a stand, look in the mirror and look within and say what can I do."

Scottie Pippen scored 21 points and Hakeem Olajuwon added 16 for Houston, which was coming off disappointing setbacks to Dallas and the Los Angeles Clippers.

The defeat cut the Rockets' lead over the fifth-place Los Angeles Lakers to one-half game in the battle for home-court advantage in the opening round of the playoffs.

"We have to do it with defense, which is non-existent right now," Tomjanovich said. "I've got an empty feeling watching us right now. I don't see that fire, I don't see that fight."

"I think you just have to hang in there," added Houston forward Charles Barkley, who had 13 points and 11 boards against his former club. "Obviously, right now we're struggling. We've lost three games in a row, but I'm not going to go crazy. You have to stay strong."

Houston took its last lead at 13-12 on Olajuwon's jumper with 6:21 remaining in the first quarter and matched its lowest point total of the season. The Rockets were held to 71 on two previous occasions.

Rex Chapman added 22 points for Phoenix, including consecutive 3-pointers that gave the Suns a 78-61 bulge early in the fourth quarter. Houston had closed to 72-61 on rookie Michael Dickerson's jumper to open the final period.

"In the second half, I thought the real key was Rex Chapman's two 3-pointers," Ainge said. "Jason Kidd had gone down and they were getting a little momentum and Rex hit the two big 3s and kept the momentum on our side."

With Kidd directing the offense, the Suns assisted on 26 of their field goals. Phoenix also converted 15 Houston turnovers ito 19 points.

Cliff Robinson had 15 points and Tom Gugliotta added 14 for the Suns, who have won five of their last six.
