Game Story

CLEVELAND (Ticker) -- Following a game in which they blew a 20-point lead in the second half, the Miami Heat avoided a similar letdown and routed the undermanned Cleveland Cavaliers, 90-65.

The win was the 944th for Miami coach Pat Riley, moving him into a tie with Bill Fitch for second place on the all-time list.

"I think they bounced back well from yesterday," said Riley about his team. "They were very angry with the loss and disappointed with themselves. I still think we're a long ways away from execution and doing things in a thinking manner instead of an instinctive manner."

Alonzo Mourning had 23 points and 12 rebounds and P.J. Brown contributed 12 and eight as Miami defeated Cleveland for the third time in two weeks and 11th in the past 12 matchups.

Tim Hardaway recorded 12 points and seven assists and Terry Porter came off the bench to score 12 points for the Heat, who were edged, 82-80, by the New York Knicks on Sunday after leading 64-44 with 2:26 remaining in the third quarter.

"It was very important to sustain this game and to go ahead and not let them come back," Hardaway said. "The key in the second half was we were taking the ball to hole. We started being forceful and we started being strong, not turning the ball over. We've still got a bad taste in our mouths from yesterday."

Miami shot 52 percent (33-for-63) and held a 45-29 lead on the boards as it moved 1 1/2 games ahead of the idle Indiana Pacers for the best record in the Eastern Conference.

Derek Anderson scored 14 points in 15 minutes off the bench and Wesley Person and Danny Ferry each added nine points for the Cavaliers. Anderson was activated off the injured list before the game and was playing for the first time since mid-April.

Cleveland's season-high five-game losing streak has dropped it 3 1/2 games from the eighth and final playoff spot.

"I think it's obvious that Miami is a far superior team right now than we are," Cleveland coach Mike Fratello said. "I thought early on in the first quarter we had a chance to stay with them, but we hurt ourselves. We dropped balls underneath the basket that were layup opportunities. We passed the ball out of bounds, got into early foul trouble and they were shooting in the bonus early."

Point guard Brevin Knight, who was placed on the IL to make room for Anderson, is out for the rest of the season with a broken left hand and Shawn Kemp, Cleveland's leading scorer and rebounder, missed his second straight game with an inflamed bursa in his right elbow.

Brown and Mourning each scored four points in the first quarter to help the Heat to an 18-11 lead. Miami built the lead to 32-21 when Mourning made a nine-footer to cap an 8-2 burst with 5:30 left in the second quarter. Hardaway scored all of his points in the second, making 5-of-6 shots from the floor as Miami took a 47-33 lead into halftime.

Cleveland could not cut the deficit closer than 49-38 when Cedric Henderson made a free throw with 8:28 left in the third. Mourning answered with a pair of free throws and hit a 19-footer to give Miami a 53-38 lead with 7:33 left.

The Heat had a 71-54 advantage when Mourning made a pair of free throws with 20 seconds left in the third and did not let the Cavaliers come any closer.
