Game Story

OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- John Starks scored a season-high 25 points and the Golden State Warriors recorded their highest point total of the season in a 114-89 pounding of the Sacramento Kings, who had a five-game winning streak stopped.

Starks scored 19 points and rookie Antawn Jamison had 15 of his 23 in the opening half as the Warriors raced to a 67-48 advantage. Golden State shot 52 percent (27-of-52) and held a 35-19 rebounding edge in the first half.

"Anytime you have an opportunity to run up and down the floor, that's basketball and that's what it's all about," Jamison said. "That's our bread and butter and it's kind of hard to defend us."

Donyell Marshall added 19 points for Golden State, which pulled within two games of the Kings and Minnesota for the final playoff berth in the Western Conference.

The Warriors' previous best offensive effort was 105 points on two other occasions. Golden State came into the game 25th in the NBA in scoring at 87.9 points per contest.

Rookie Predrag Stojakovic and Lawrence Funderburke tallied 17 points apiece for the Kings, who were denied in their bid to win a sixth straight game for the first time since December 22, 1992-January 5, 1993.

Sacramento played without leading scorer and rebounder Chris Webber, who was suffering from back spasms. Webber averages 20.2 points and an NBA-best 13.0 rebounds per game.

"We're going to miss him (Webber), but we definetely should've played better than we played," Sacramento coach Rick Adelman said. "It's the worst game we played since the first game of the season against San Antonio. You can't use that as an excuse. We didn't defend them, we didn't rebound and that's just mental. We didn't play the way you have to on the road."

The Warriors took the lead for good at 38-37 with 7 1/2 minutes left in the second quarter after Marshall made a driving layup.

Golden State held a 50-46 advantage with 4:22 left in the first half before taking control. Starks scored 10 points to fuel a 17-2 surge to close the half, giving the Warriors a commanding 67-48 cushion.

Starks went 6-of-13 from the floor in the first half and finished 9-of-19 for the game. As a team, the Warriors shot 51 percent (45-of-89) and held a 52-39 rebounding advantage.

A dunk by Erick Dampier with 9:20 left in third quarter gave the Warriors their biggest lead of the contest at 76-52.

But the Kings used a 17-4 run, capped by Tariq Abdul-Wahad's dunk to close to 80-69 with 3:53 left in the period. That's as close as they would get.

Without the inside presence of Webber, the Kings were forced out to the perimeter and shot just 39 percent (34-of-87).

Jamison grabbed 11 rebounds and Bimbo Coles collected 10 points and a season-high 12 assists for Golden State.
