Game Story

SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- Jason Kidd scored 19 points and ignited a decisive run to end the third quarter as the surging Phoenix Suns defeated the league-leading Utah Jazz for the second time in less than a week, 99-85.

The Jazz took a 58-55 lead with 6:20 left in the third quarter after Jeff Hornacek hit an 18-foot jumper. But Kidd scored four straight points to trigger a 19-4 spurt that closed the period and put the Suns ahead, 74-62, heading into the final quarter.

Kidd, who also finished with 12 assists, tallied 10 points in the pivotal surge.

Rex Chapman scored 23 points and rookie Pat Garrity added 17 for Phoenix, which has won six of its last seven to pull within 2 1/2 games of the Los Angeles Lakers for fifth place in the Western Conference. The Suns also moved two games ahead of seventh-place Sacramento.

Karl Malone had 21 points and John Stockton contributed 13 and 11 assists for the Jazz, who lost for the second time in the last five days against Phoenix. Utah beat the Suns earlier this season at home when Malone hit three free throws with sixth-tenths of a second remaining.

"We had a couple of bad stretches where we didn't get anything done really at either end of the court," Stockton said. "We didn't do it offensively and they were able to push the it up the floor and get easy baskets."

Utah also had its lead trimmed to a half-game over Portland for the best record in the NBA.

Leading by 12 points entering the final quarter, the Suns were surprisingly never threatened the rest of the way. Shandon Anderson hit to free throws with 10 1/2 minutes remaining to bring the Jazz within 74-65 but that is close as they got.

The Suns took their biggest lead of the contest, 99-81, with 68 seconds left after rookie Toby Bailey sank a 12-footer.

"That's obviously a very good win for us," Phoenix coach Danny Ainge said. "It kind of takes the sour taste out of the mouth for the last one we lost here at the buzzer on Karl's free throws."

Malone got the Jazz off to a good start in the opening quarter, making all five of his shots from the field as Utah took a 29-22 advantage. The Jazz shot a blistering 71 percent (12-of-17) from the floor in the first period.

Malone made just 3-of-11 attempts the rest of the way as the Jazz finished at 44 percent (32-of-73) from the floor.

The Suns quickly came back in the second quarter. They opened the period by scoring 13 of the first 15 points, capped by Kidd's two free throws 7 1/2 minutes before halftime to take a 35-31 lead.

After torching the nets in the first quarter, the Jazz shot just 22 percent (5-of-22) in the second and trailed, 44-42 at the half.

Chapman went 9-of-16 from the field and Garrity connected on 7-of-14 shots as the Suns shot 47 percent (35-of-74) and held a 39-36 rebounding edge. Phoenix was an impressive 25-of-29 (86 percent) at the free throw line.

"They got that one late here last time so this win might be a surprise to the fans and media, but I don't think we were surprised and I don't know if they (Jazz) were surprised," Chapman said.

Phoenix won despite playing without Tom Gugliotta, who missed his second straight game with a sore left ankle. Gugliotta is averaging 16.8 points per game.

The Suns' Joe Kleine left the game late in the first quarter after getting elbowed in the lower lip by Malone. Kleine needed 30 stitches to close the gash.
