Game Story

TORONTO (Ticker) -- The Charlotte Hornets remained in the thick of the Eastern Conference playoff race by dealing the Toronto Raptors a significant blow in their pursuit of a first-ever postseason appearance.

Eddie Jones had 28 points and seven steals and David Wesley scored six points during a decisive fourth-quarter run as the Hornets posted a crucial 108-98 victory over Toronto.

"I have to credit Eddie Jones," Charlotte coach Paul Silas said. "He came up with the big shots and steals."

The win moved the Hornets (23-22) within one game of eighth-place New York for the final playoff spot in the East. The Raptors (22-23) slipped two games behind the Knicks. Both teams have five games remaining.

"We're working hard right now and praying that everything falls in place for us," Jones said. "You try and get a lead and make them play from behind. I have to be a leader on this team. Not just me, but everyone at some point."

Tracy McGrady scored a career-high 27 points for the Raptors, including six during an 8-0 spurt that pulled them within 79-77 with 9:24 to play.

"I'm capable of doing that and it doesn't surprise me at all, getting the 27 points," McGrady said. "I just have to go out and give the team a lot of energy. We're still in it and we still have a chance. Now we've got to go 5-0." "

But Wesley, who finished with 17 points, responded with a 3-pointer, a free throw and a 10-footer during an 8-0 run that stretched Charlotte's lead to 87-77 with 6:23 remaining.

"I like our chances if we keep playing hard," Wesley said. "It's important to hit shots in the fourth quarter and tonight that was the difference. They got a couple of runs but we got the big basket when we needed it."

Jones was 6-of-14 from the field and made 15-of-17 at the line. His stellar defense helped the Hornets to 28 points off 18 Toronto turnovers.

"It's crunch time," Jones added. "It doesn't matter. You've got to give your all. Tonight I just went for it and got to the line."

Rookie Vince Carter scored 22 points and Kevin Willis and Doug Christie added 12 apiece for the Raptors, who play four of their last five games on the road.

"Veteran teams make aggressive sets and they know where they need to get to," Toronto coach Butch Carter said. "It showed up tonight in the way Charlotte got to the foul line. We are just a young team. (We) put up a decent fight but they don't understand what they're up against. They are more comfortable on the road getting into a dogfight rather than making a stand at home. I told them that they have to try to seize the moment. They have achieved enough for a lot of people but it's up to them how far we can go."

Bobby Phills scored 20 points and Chucky Brown added 16 for Charlotte, which has two home games left.

Dee Brown collected 10 points for Toronto, which shot 41 percent (33-of-81) and held a 47-33 advantage on the boards. The Raptors held a 16-3 edge in second-chance points.

Elden Campbell scored 13 points and Derrick Coleman added 12 and nine rebounds of the bench for Charlotte, which shot 46 percent (34-of-74) and went 35-of-43 from the line.

"Derrick Coleman was responsible for some big boards," Silas added. "I think it's a matter of confidence that we can go anywhere and win. Toronto had their chances. If the ball had bounced the other way, things may have been different."

With his team trailing 79-69 with 11:40 remaining, McGrady took control. He dunked, made a running jumper and slammed again after a pair of free throws by Brown to pull his team within two with 9:23 to go.

Wesley answered with a 24-footer, Campbell hit two from the line and Wesley made a free throw before burying a 22-footer from the right sideline to make it 87-77 with 6:23 remaining.
