Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- Hubert Davis scored four of his 19 points during a 10-0 run that closed the third quarter and drained a key 3-pointer with 3:17 remaining as the Dallas Mavericks held off the Houston Rockets, 91-81.

The Mavericks used the third-quarter burst to open a 71-57 lead entering the fourth period. Houston fought within 80-75 on Scottie Pippen's 17-footer, but Davis' 3-pointer pushed Dallas' advantage eight points, virtually sealing the outcome.

"It was real lucky," Davis said. "I didn't know what to do because I got stuck up at the top. I just threw it up, it was total luck."

Michael Finley and rookie Dirk Nowitzki scored 22 points apiece and Gary Trent added 20 for Dallas, which committed just six turnovers while turning 16 Houston miscues into 18 points.

"They're terrible," said Rockets forward Charles Barkley, who had nine points and 16 rebounds. "We just played terrible against them. They get themselves psyched up against us. It must be a Dallas-Houston thing, but you are what you are, and after next Wedensday, they are going home and we're going to the playoffs."

The Mavericks have won three straight games for the first time this season.

Pippen scored 16 points for the Rockets, who have dropped three of their last four as they fight for home-court advantage in the first round of the Western Conference playoffs. Houston watched its lead for fourth place in the West drop to only one-half game over the Los Angeles Lakers, who defeated Portland tonight.

"We just didn't get it done tonight," said Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich. "Sometimes the ball just doesn't go in. I thought our defense was good, but Dallas made several shots as the shot clock was going down. It's kind of ironic that their shooting percentage was lower than ours."

A 15-foot jumper by Hakeem Olajuwon with 3:32 left in the third quarter brought the Rockets within 61-57. But they went scoreless the rest of the quarter as the Mavericks took control.

Davis began the 10-0 spurt with two fouls shots, and after Antoine Carr missed a jumper, Nowitzki was fouled by Olajuwon and made both free throws to give the Mavericks an eight-point lead.

Olajuwon's turnover led to Michael Finley's 3-pointer. Rookie Cuttino Mobley misfired twice for the Rockets and Davis' runner with 43 seconds left made it 70-57. Shawn Bradley connected on the first of two free throws with 16 seconds left to provide the 14-point margin.

"It's all about confidence," said Finley. "We establish a lot of confidence when we blew them out (109-95 on April 21). "We knew tonight that they would come out and be more aggressive, but we sustained our confidence because we knew we could beat them here."

Olajuwon, who had 14 points and 10 rebounds, sat out the majority of the fourth quarter because of a thigh bruise. He is questionable Friday's home game against the Utah Jazz.

"It was a knee to the thigh," Olajuwon said. "I'll have to ice it and see how it feels in the morning. That's my only concern. Bradley hit it when I tried to make a move to the baseline. I tried to run after that and I couldn't."

Bradley grabbed 11 rebounds and Nowitzki and Gary Trent had seven apiece for Dallas, which held a 45-43 advantage on the boards ans shot 41 percent (34-of-83) from the field, including 4-of-14 from beyond the arc.

The Mavericks went 19-of-24 from the foul line while Houston went to the line just 11 times, making seven.

"Who would have even thought this?" Dallas coach Don Nelson said. "We didn't even shoot that well. This was an unexpected win for us. We stuck to our guns even though we didn't shoot the ball well and we still won the game."

Sam Mack scored 13 points for the Rockets, who connected on 44 percent (34-of-77) and were 6-of-21 from 3-point range.

Mack scored six of his points during an 11-2 run early in the fourth quarter and drained a 13-footer with 7:25 left that brought Houston within 76-71. But the Rockets were unable to get closer than five points throughout the final seven minutes as they consistently misfired from the outside.
