Game Story

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- It seemed just a matter of time until the Phoenix Suns would clinch a playoff berth for the 11th consecutive season. It also was just a matter of time until they blew away the Vancouver Grizzlies.

The Suns dissected the Grizzlies over the final 15 1/2 minutes for their seventh straight win in the series, 107-77, to become the latest postseason entrant.

Tom Gugliotta had 24 points and 12 rebounds, Rex Chapman added 20 points and both helped turn the game in Phoenix's favor late in the third quarter.

"That's something we're proud of," Gugliotta said of making the playoffs. "We didn't get off to the greatest start. We thought we should have made it, and right now we're fighting for position, so the next two games are going to be very important for us."

With Phoenix trailing 62-58 with 3:30 left, Gugliotta had a jumper and layup to spark a stunning 37-7 burst. Chapman added a 3-pointer late in the quarter, helping the Suns to a 69-65 lead entering the final period.

George McCloud drained back-to-back 3-pointers and Phoenix scored 26 of the first 30 points in the quarter. Jason Kidd had a layup and fed Cliff Robinson for a lay-in to close the run, giving the Suns a 95-69 cushion with 4:50 to play.

The Suns remained one game in front of Minnesota for sixth place in the Western Conference by holding Vancouver to 15 points over the final 15 1/2 minutes. Phoenix made 16-of-26 (62 percent) in the fourth quarter and limited Vancouver to 4-of-17 (24 percent).

"Are you sure we clinched a playoff spot?" joked Suns coach Danny Ainge. "We picked it up with the defense late in the third and in the fourth quarter, and we were able to get the win that we needed."

Kidd contributed 14 points and 13 assists, McCloud scored 14 points and Robinson chipped in 11 for the Suns, whose seven-game home winning streak is their longest since a 14-game run to open the 1994-95 season. Phoenix has not missed the postseason since 1988.

"We just picked it up a bit in the third and fourth," Robinson said. "Jason did a great job getting to the open court. When we're able to do that, we're pretty tough. When we started opening it up, each time we hit a basket, they just lost a little bit more."

The Grizzlies fell to 2-13 in the all-time series, including a 1-7 mark in Phoenix. Owner of the league's worst record at 8-40, Vancouver has dropped 22 in a row on the road.

It appeared Phoenix might run away early, taking a 19-10 lead on Gugliotta's dunk midway through the first quarter. But Shareef Abdur-Rahim scored six of his 23 points in the final 3 1/2 minutes of the quarter as Vancouver pulled within 23-22.

"It started off real well in the first quarter, and then we started unraveling," Abdur-Rahim said.

Vancouver took its largest lead, 38-33, on two free throws by rookie Felipe Lopez with 4:24 left in the second quarter. Gugliotta hit a layup and Kidd found McCloud for a 3-pointer to tie it, but the Grizzlies grabbed a 42-40 halftime lead.

"I was happy with our play in the first half but I was not happy with our play in the third quarter, even though we were only down by four," said Grizzlies coach Brian Hill. "I don't think we came out with the confidence and aggressiveness that we should have had in that situation."

The game was tight throughout the third quarter until Phoenix began to pull away. The Grizzlies were within 80-69 with eight minutes to play when the Suns reeled off 15 straight points to put the game out of reach.

McCloud scored nine points in the quarter-opening run, including a dunk off a feed by Kidd for an 89-69 advantage with 6:25 left.

The Suns committed just three turnovers in the second half while scoring 17 points off nine Vancouver turnovers.

Rookie Mike Bibby handed out eight assists but scored just six points on 3-of-15 shooting for the Grizzlies, who hit less than 40 percent (29-of-73) from the floor. Phoenix connected on 54 percent (43-of-80).
