Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- The Houston Rockets kept alive their chances for home-court advantage in the first round of playoffs with a 110-84 pounding of the lowly Los Angeles Clippers as Hakeem Olajuwon scored 20 points.

Olajuwon scored 12 points in the first quarter and Charles Barkley had nine of his 19 in a 14-5 spurt in the opening period that gave Houston a 20-9 lead. The Rockets led by 13 points at halftime and by as many as 30 in fourth quarter in avenging an overtime loss at Los Angeles nine days ago.

Houston (29-19) is tied with the Los Angeles Lakers for fourth place in the Western Conference with each team having two games remaining. The Rockets must finish with a better record than the Lakers to secure home court since they lost the season series.

Brent Price added 14 points for the Rockets, who won for just the second time in their last six games. Houston had lost its last three games against teams under .500.

Troy Hudson matched a season-high with 20 points and Maurice Taylor contributed 18 for Los Angeles, which has dropped seven of its last nine games. The Clippers (9-39) are 1 1/2 games ahead of Vancouver (8-40) for the NBA's worst record.

"They played well throughout the game," Los Angeles coach Chris Ford said about the Rockets. "They're trying to play for home-court advantage and they just came out and dominated."

Houston had been held to an average of 79.5 points in losing its last two games but made a concerted effort to run more tonight.

A layup by Barkley with 6:50 left in the first quarter capped a 14-5 surge and gave the Rockets a 20-9 advantage.

Sparked by Barkley and Olajuwon, who were both perfect from the floor in the first quarter, the Rockets shot an impressive 65 percent (11-of-17) and opened a 34-21 cushion.

"I told the guys during a long sit-down that we were going to run," Barkley said. "When the ball goes through the basket, I'm taking it out and looking to push it. When we run it makes everybody play better because they feel involved and we play with more energy defensively."

The Rockets' lead dipped below double figures just once in the second quarter and by halftime they led 63-50 behind 16 points from Olajuwon and 13 from Barkley. The points in the half were a season high for Houston.

"It was a much-needed win. It got us off the schneid," Houston coach Rudy Tomjanovich said. "It keeps us there in the race for home-court advantage. Our defense stayed at a constant level and I really like the way we pushed the ball up the court. We should push the ball up against a team that is playing a back-to-back."

Houston shot 63 percent (22-of-35) in the first half and 51 percent (41-of-80) overall.

The second half was not much different. A layup by rookie Cuttino Mobley with 2:08 left in the third quarter gavethe Rockets an 80-60 lead.

Los Angeles closed to 86-74 with just over seven minutes to go but got no closer.

The Rockets hit seven 3-pointers in the final quarter and took their biggest lead at 108-78 with 1:32 remaining on Sam Mack's 3-pointer. Houston shot 52 percent (11-of-21) from beyond the arc.

Mack and Scottie Pippen added 14 points apiece as the Rockets posted their second-biggest win of the season. They beat the Golden State Warriors by 37 points at home earlier this month.

Rookie Brian Skinner added a season-high 14 points for Los Angeles, which shot 43 percent (33-of-77).
