Game Story

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- The Seattle SuperSonics moved closer to missing the playoffs for the first time since 1990 after a deperate fourth-quarter comeback attempt fell short.

Shaquille O'Neal scored 33 points and Kobe Bryant added 19 of his 28 in the third quarter as the Los Angeles Lakers held on for a 91-84 victory over the Sonics.

The Lakers remained tied with the Houston Rockets in the race for the home-court edge in the first round. The Rockets defeated the Los Angeles Clippers tonight.

"We just want to go to the playoffs playing good basketball with a little momentum," Bryant said.

Seattle (23-25) dropped two games behind eighth-place Sacramento (25-23) in the battle for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference with only two games remaining. The Kings defeated Phoenix tonight.

To make the playoffs, Seattle would have to win its last two games and Sacramento would have to lose its final two contests.

Seattle's loss clinched a playoff berth for the Minnesota Timberwolves for the third straight season.

Gary Payton scored 29 points and Detlef Schrempf added 21 for the Sonics, who were outscored, 30-13, in the third quarter after opening a 44-40 halftime lead.

Although not mathematically eliminated, the Sonics reacted as though the defeat knocked them out of postseason contention.

"We had to win the last three games," Seattle forward-center Olden Polynice said. "This one was probably the most critical of all and we just didn't do it."

"I feel disappointed," added forward Vin Baker, who returned Friday after missing six games with a bone contusion. "I came back to help us win these last three games."

Seattle will need to win its last two games just to finish at .500 under first-year coach Paul Westphal after winning at least 50 games the previous six seasons under George Karl.

"Because of the lockout and the changes they had to go through, it's been tough on them," Bryant said. "But they'll be back next year."

Trailing by 15 late in the third quarter, Seattle pulled within 81-78 on Baker's foul-line jumper with 2:19 remaining.

Los Angeles held on by scoring six of its final 10 points from the line, including a pair by Bryant that provided an 88-82 lead with 29 seconds to go.

"We played pretty good today," O'Neal said. "We played all-around ball. We're gonna have to use our weapons and we did that tonight."

"I will never say I'm satisfield until we're winning every game by 20," Lakers coach Kurt Rambis added. "In my mind, there's always room for improvement. We did an awful lot of good things today and we still made some mistakes; some mental, some physical."

Bryant singlehandedly outscored the Sonics in the third quarter, registering 17 straight Los Angeles points from 10:39 until the 5:25 mark.

"In the third quarter, I wanted to come out with a little more aggression," Bryant said.

His dunk gave the Lakers a 70-55 lead with 33 seconds left in the period before the Sonics mounted their comeback.

"We went dead in the water on offense (in the third quarter) and we just couldn't score," Westphal said.

O'Neal gave Seattle a chance down the stretch by missing 5-of-10 throws in the final two minutes and wasn't surprised the Sonics repeatedly sent him to the line.

"I sit around the house and wait for a situation like that," he said. "I always make one. I'm gonna start making two. I ain't missing no more."

The Sonics had an opportunity to cut the deficit to two, but Drew Barry launced an airball from 3-point range and Schrempf missed the follow shot with 12 seconds remaining. Glen Rice dunked with one second left to cap the win.
