Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- The Sacramento Kings used a second-quarter run to secure their first playoff berth in three years as they continued their strong play down the stretch with a 112-104 victory over the reeling Denver Nuggets.

Sacramento, which has made the postseason only once since the franchise moved from Kansas City in 1985, has enjoyed a stunning turnaround this season. At 26-23 they have a chance to match their entire win total from 1997-98 when they host Vancouver on Wednesday.

"Getting into the playoffs is a great accomplishment for our team," said Kings coach Rick Adelman. "I couldn't be prouder of a group. ... It was a terrific win. This is a real happy locker room and I'm glad we won it tonight."

"It feels good to be in the playoffs," added rookie point guard Jason Williams, one of the reasons for the team's turnaround. "That was my No. 1 goal coming in. I don't worry about Rookie of the Year. People always ask me about that and it's nice, but we're in the playoffs."

The Kings moved into a tie with Phoenix for sixth place in the Western Conference and hold the tiebreaker over the Suns. They also moved one-half game ahead of eighth-place Minnesota.

Vlade Divac had 25 points and Predrag Stojakovic scored 10 of his 17 in a pivotal second-quarter burst. Scot Pollard added 16 points and 10 rebounds for Sacramento, which has won nine of its last 10 games.

"It's very exciting for us," said Divac, who signed just before the season as a free agent. "This is our first season together. I came to Sacramento because of the challenge. The first day I signed, I believed we could be a playoff team."

Sacramento was without leading scorer and rebounder Chris Webber, who missed the game with back spasms.

Chauncey Billups scored 26 points and Danny Fortson added 21 and 18 rebounds for the Nuggets, who have dropped six straight and are a dismal 14-35.

"We just didn't put enough effort into the first half," said Nuggets coach Mike D'Antoni. "We needed this game for pride reasons but just didn't come out to play. I felt we were a better team than they were, at least before the game."

Sacramento opened the contest by shooting 14-for-25 in the first quarter. Corliss Williamson made 5-of-7 shots, grabbed four rebounds and had four assists as the Kings led 31-26 after 12 minutes.

The Nuggets got within 39-36 with 9:05 left in the first half. But Jon Barry made two free throws to spark a 17-6 burst by Sacramento. Stojakovic had 10 points during the run, which was capped by two more free throws by Barry with 4:01 left.

Stojakovic was 5-of-8 for 11 points in the period. The Kings led 63-49 at the break and the 63 points were the most allowed by Denver in a half this season.

The Kings led by at least eight points throughout the third quarter and Denver got no closer than five over the final 12 minutes. One reason why the Nuggets could not cut into the deficit was their inability to get to the free throw line.

Over the final 24 minutes, Denver attempted only three free throws while Sacramento went 14-of-19 from the stripe.

The Kings won all three meetings with Denver this season, just the third time they have swept the season series since 1976.

The Nuggets' bench was outscored, 46-16, and has been outscored by a 95-39 margin in the last two contests.
