Game Story

CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Horace Grant, Bo Outlaw and rookie Matt Harpring each scored 14 points as the Orlando Magic capped a stellar season and ruined "Phil Jackson Night" with their fourth straight win, 103-83 over the lowly Chicago Bulls.

The Magic, who finished third in the Eastern Conference after missing the playoffs with a 41-41 mark last season, will face the surprising Philadelphia 76ers in the best-of-five first-round series. It will mark the first time the teams have met in the postseason. The Magic lost two of three meetings with the Sixers this season.

"First of all, you've got (Philadelphia coach) Larry Brown to deal with," Orlando coach Chuck Daly said. "He's one of the best coaches in this league. Secondly, with Philadelphia you've got the leading scorer in the league (Allen Iverson), who we have not been able to control all season. It's going to be a tough go for us."

By winning tonight, Orlando (33-17) also finished with the same record as Central Division champion Indiana. The Magic won the season series from the Pacers and, according to NBA tiebreakers, would host a conference semifinal series if both teams were to advance.

"I know I have to take it to another level," Magic guard Penny Hardaway said after scoring only four points on 1-of-8 shooting. "I have to go out there and take the ball hard to the basket. Go to the foul line and defend my man to the utmost. As a team we need to be more aggressive offensively and play tough team defense."

In a painful reminder of how good things used to be, the Bulls (13-37) honored former coach Jackson at halftime of tonight's season finale. Jackson, who guided the Bulls to six titles in the previous eight seasons, addressed the crowd after listening to some of his former players and coaches speak on his behalf.

"I had a wonderful time and I know you did, too," Jackson said of his dynastic stint in the Windy City.

In their rebuilding program under Tim Floyd, the Bulls (13-37) finished last in the East as well as posting the worst winning percentage in the 33-year history of the franchise.

"I was very grateful for Phil's acceptance of me coming in here," Floyd said. "I appreciated his willingness to open up and share his thoughts with me and the other coaches during the lockout. He was invaluable to me as far as assessing the abilities of our returning players."

Orlando swept the season series from Chicago for the first time in its 10-year history, winning three games by an average of 25.3 points.

Ron Harper scored 17 points and Toni Kukoc added 14 and 11 rebounds for the Bulls, who dropped seven of their last eight games.

Isaac Austin and Darrell Armstrong collected 12 points apiece for Orlando, which shot 51 percent (40-of-79) from the field, held a 44-30 advantage on the boards and forced 20 turnovers.

"We've got the right coach and we've got a good mix of young and veteran players," Armstrong said. "We've got a four-game winning streak going into the playoffs. We just need to find the same type of energy that we've had during this streak against Philadelphia."

Austin scored four points during a 6-0 spurt that ended the third quarter and thrust the Magic ahead for good, 73-67. Orlando took command with a 13-2 run in the fourth quarter, making it 94-75 with 2:48 to play.

Bill Wennington scored 12 points and rookie Cory Carr added 10 for Chicago, which shot 48 percent (36-of-75) but was just 7-of-11 at the line.
