Game Story

ATLANTA (Ticker) -- With home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs on the line, the Atlanta Hawks took care of matters early against the Washington Wizards.

Grant Long scored a season-high 22 points as the Hawks never trailed en route to an easy 100-92 victory over the Washington Wizards.

Steve Smith scored 17 points and Mookie Blaylock added 14 for Atlanta, which clinched fourth place in the Eastern Conference and will host Detroit in the best-of-five playoff series. The Hawks were 1-2 against the Pistons this year.

"Nothing's easy," Atlanta coach Lenny Wilkens said. "I think it's important to have home-court advantage, especially in the first round. It's a short series. We just have to be smart and stick to the game plan. Everybody has to be on the same page."

Long, who was 9-of-21 from the field and 4-of-4 at the line, was starting in place of injured forward Alan Henderson, who missed the game with an eye injury and is questionable for the postseason opener.

"You have to give us credit," Long said. "We came out and played hard. We have home-court advantage, we can get down to business and start our second season. We need to remain focused. We'll be prepared."

"Alan took a real shot in the eye," Wilkens added. "He's still seeing double vision. He's getting better but it's a slow process."

The Hawks have qualified for the playoffs in each of the last seven seasons and faced the Pistons in the first round two years ago, eliminating them in five tough games.

Otis Thorpe scored 17 points and Rod Strickland added 15 for Washington (18-32), which finished below .500 for the first time since going 39-43 in 1995-96. The Wizards dropped their last 11 road contests and failed to qualify for the playoffs for the second straight season.

Atlanta won the season series, 2-1.

Holding a 14-13 lead with 6:45 remaining in the first quarter, the Hawks exploded for a 16-4 run and never looked back.

Blaylock, who scored eight points during the spurt, sparked it with an 18-footer and a 3-pointer to give the Hawks a 19-13 cushion with 5:34 remaining.

Smith drained one from beyond the arc and Long hit a short jumper to make it 23-15 with 4:24 left. Blaylock capped the run with a 25-footer from the left sideline with 2:38 left that gave the Hawks a 30-17 bulge.

"We came out and played with a sense of urgency and never let this game get close," Smith said. "We really wanted the home-court advantage. The playoffs is a totally new year. The past is the past and now the sky's the limit."

Tim Legler scored 13 points and Mitch Richmond and Chris Whitney added 10 apiece for the Wizards, who shot 42 percent (33-of-78) and yielded 22 points off 14 turnovers.

"This is just another disappointment because we have the talent," said Richmond. "For some reason, things just didn't go the way we wanted. You want to put it behind you. We want to get this out of our minds. It's tough because the playoffs are coming up and we have to just watch. It was a bad season. It was at the bottom."

Dikembe Mutombo had 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Hawks, who held a 52-37 advantage on the boards, including a 24-13 edge on the offensive glass.

"It feels good," Mutombo said. "It's a different time of the year right now. You have to play tough and be as mean as you can. Detroit's going to come to our house. We have to make sure we accomplish what we need to accomplish."

Chris Crawford collected 10 points for Atlanta, which shot 42 percent (40-of-96) and outscored Washington, 52-30, in the paint.
