Game Story

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- The Orlando Magic quickly learned that the preseason and the regular season are completely different things.

Eddie Jones scored 15 of his 24 points in the third quarter as the Charlotte Hornets spoiled Doc Rivers' coaching debut with a 100-86 romp over the Magic in the season opener for both teams.

The hiring of Rivers was just part of a massive rebuilding by the Magic, who are pointing toward next season's free agent market but still have to play this season. Despite a limited roster, they went 6-2 in the preseason but ran into a talented Hornets team many are picking to win the Eastern Conference.

"Charlotte is a very good team," Rivers said. "They can run and they have the horses coming off the bench. I've said this before, they have the most talent in the East. Give them time and they will grow together. They have confidence and that comes from (coach) Paul Silas. He is doing a very good job with them."

Rivers, who replaced Chuck Daly, saw his revamped team miss all eight of its 3-pointers while Charlotte hit 10-of-22.

"If we get into a half-court game, we are going to struggle," Rivers said. "We had many breakdowns. We definitely have a better team than the way we played tonight. We got shots. They just didn't go in."

Jones scored nine points during a pivotal 24-10 run that capped a 37-point third quarter and gave Charlotte a 79-57 lead. David Wesley and Bobby Phills ignited the run with 3-pointers.

"I thought Bobby really picked it up in the second half," Silas said. "He led the charge. Eddie also gave a good effort. They were doubling Elden (Campball), Mase (Anthony Mason) and Derrick (Coleman), but they all did a good job inside."

Jones put the Hornets ahead for good at 35-32 with a 3-pointer from the right corner with 4:13 remaining in the second quarter. Phills followed with a 3-pointer and two dunks to cap a 14-1 burst that gave Charlotte a 42-33 advantage.

Orlando cut the deficit with a 7-0 run to end the first half, highlighted by a pair of baskets by newcomer Pat Garrity and a buzzer-beating layup by Darrell Armstrong. Garrity arrived in the deal that sent star guard Penny hardaway to Phoenix.

"At halftime, I told them I wasn't happy with our defense," Silas said. "We weren't adhering to defensive principles. In the second half, we were adhering to the principles and we really played well. We blitzed and rotated whereas we were just standing around in the first half."

The Hornets opened their biggest lead at 92-63 with 6:40 to go.

Chris Gatling had 15 points and seven rebounds for the Magic, who finished tied for the best record in the East last season but traded four starters during the offseason.

"We didn't do the little things that help you win basketball games tonight," Magic center Michael Doleac said. "We know we are a good team, but we have to play 48 minutes. We can't just play one half or we will get our butts kicked like we did tonight."

Phills scored 20 points for the Hornets, who improved to just 3-9 in season openers. The 14-point win was the largest margin of victory on opening night in franchise history.

"The big guys' hard work opened up the shots for me," Phills said. "I like playing small forward, but with the talent we have on this team with Derrick, Mason and Elden, I think that it doesn't matter where I play as long as I give my all."

The Hornets have won five stright games against the Magic at the Charlotte Coliseum.
