Game Story

SAN ANTONIO (Ticker) -- The San Antonio Spurs are picking right up where they left off at the end of last season.

David Robinson scored 19 points in just 25 minutes and Tim Duncan added 15 and 14 rebounds as the defending NBA champions cruised to a 104-81 rout of the overmatched Golden State Warriors.

After the Warriors took their last lead at 11-9, San Antonio ended the first quarter with a 9-0 run to grab a 23-14 advantage and never looked back. Robinson and Duncan spent the fourth quarter on the bench.

"Offensively, things weren't happening but we got our offensive rebounds and still won," Duncan said. "We did great defensively. The low shooting percentage was very good. That's what we wanted to do. That's what we did last year."

The Spurs shot 49 percent (40-of-81) from the field while holding Golden State to only 34 percent (30-of-88).

"I was thrilled with the defense," San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said. "Everyone did a great job on the defensive end of the court. On the the offense end, they were unselfish. I liked the way the big guys played, passing the ball and looking for each other."

Six San Antonio players reached double figures. Walker led all players off the bench with 16 points, while Mario Elie and Jerome Kersey contributed 10 apiece. Walker's layup gave the Spurs their biggest lead at 92-65 with 5:21 remaining.

"More and more, he's getting used to the system," Popovich said of Walker. "He was nervous the first game and he was still a little nervous the first half tonight but the nerves are starting to disappear. He's working harder and he's going to find he has a lot in him he didn't know he had, especially the way we keep pushing him."

San Antonio has captured 33 of its last 38 regular-season games and, counting last season's playoffs, are 48-7 since March 1.

"They have so many good basketball players and so many of them are veteran players," Golden State coach P.J. Carlesimo said. "That's what you need to be a winning team."

Eligible for free agency at the end of the season, Duncan has averaged 17.5 points and 15 rebounds in San Antonio's two wins. He had 20 and 16 in Tuesday's 89-76 triumph over Philadelphia.

Antawn Jamison scored 18 points and Tony Farmer added 11 for the Warriors, who shot just 34 percent (30-of-88). Golden State opened its season with a 108-96 loss at Dallas on Tuesday.

"I'm getting tired of Tim Duncan," Jamison said. "I played against him in college and now I'm playing against him in the pros."

After holding a 44-34 halftime lead, San Antonio slowly pulled away in the third quarter, outscoring the Warriors, 29-22. Duncan had nine points in the period.

"You can't come in soft against the Spurs," Jamison said. "You have to be smart and you have to make them work. You think you have an open shot against them and they were just sitting back and knocking down our shots."

Jamison grabbed 11 rebounds for the Warriors, who had a 51-46 edge on the boards. Golden State also outscored San Antonio, 38-36, in the paint.

"We can't always be playing to our big guys," San Antonio guard Mario Elie said. "We have to play better on the perimeter. Our big guys helped out with offensive rebounds. There are still things we have to work on. We have to get everybody involved."

The Spurs wore down the Warriors with their superior depth. After Farmer, no other Golden State player scored more than nine points.
