Game Story

BOSTON (Ticker) -- Even with a 20-point lead, the Boston Celtics knew it was not going to be easy.

Kenny Anderson hit four free throws in the final 54 seconds as the Celtics held on for a 103-100 victory over the Charlotte Hornets to improve to 3-0 for the first time in nine years.

Charlotte, which suffered its first loss of the season, had a chance to tie but Elden Campbell's off-balance 3-pointer from the top of the key missed the rim.

Rookie Adrian Griffin, who stripped Charlotte's Eddie Jones on the Hornets' previous possession, grabbed the rebound as he was falling out of bounds. He tossed the ball in the air, allowing time to expire.

"It was wonderful to win a game like this," Boston coach Rick Pitino said. "We had them at our pace in the first half. They were coming off back-to-back games. We tired a little bit in the second half, let them get back in it by not rebounding, by not taking smart shots."

Anderson scored 24 points, including a jumper with 9:37 left in the third quarter that gave the Celtics a 69-49 cushion. But Boston could not keep up its furious pace and Charlotte, considered by many to be the team to beat in the Eastern Conference, stormed back.

"We're not gonna quit even when we're down 20," Charlotte coach Paul Silas. "I know what kind of quality team I have. I was proud of them for that tonight. But we just made too many mistakes in execution and it cost us."

Trailing 94-82, the Hornets used a 17-5 run and pulled even at 99-99 on Campbell's steal and dunk with 1:54 remaining. Anderson hit a pair from the line a minute later before Anthony Mason made 1-of-2 foul shots for Charlotte with 45 seconds to go.

Boston's Antoine Walker missed a 3-pointer on the next possession but Griffin, who had five steals, knocked the ball away from Jones on the left baseline.

"It's just great after my days in the CBA to get an opportunity like this and make the big play," Griffin said. "But I probably wouldn't have made it if Kenny didn't come down and help out the way he did."

Anderson, who was double-teamming Jones, scooped up the loose ball and was immediately fouled. He converted both free throws to account for the final margin.

"I really wasn't supposed to be there helping out but as it turned out, I was in the right place at the right time and Adrian made the big play," Anderson said.

"I feel horrible, that was not my game tonight," said Jones, who scored eight points. "I can play a lot better than that. I just choked. There are no excuses."

Boston jumped out to an 8-0 lead and and never trailed. The Celtics shot 64 percent in the opening 24 minutes in building a 59-48 halftime and appeared to put the contest away early in the third period.

"Right now, we're a team playing with tremendous confidence," Boston forward Paul Pierce said. "We're playing well, we're 3-0."

Anderson's jumped capped a 9-0 run that gave Boston its 20-point cushion but the Celtics cooled off and the Hornets slowly climbed back into the game.

David Wesley scored 17 points and Bobby Phills added 15 for the Hornets. Eddie Robinson made his first five shots and scored 11 of his 14 points in the first quarter for Charlotte.

Tony Battie scored 18 points while Walker and Pierce added 15 apiece for Boston, which has won won three in a row for the first time since February 24-27 of last season.

"I feel great for a player like Adrian Griffin, who play hard, plays smart and made the key play tonight," Pitino said.

The Celtics finished just 45 percent (39-of-87) from the field while Charlotte shot 48 percent (36-of-75). Griffin also grabbed 10 rebounds for Boston, which had a 46-41 edge on the boards.
