Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- Allan Houston used to struggle when he returned to Detroit. Not anymore.

Houston scored 29 points against his former team as the undefeated New York Knicks held on for a 103-91 victory over the Pistons, improving to 3-0 without injured All-Star center Patrick Ewing.

Houston spent his first three seasons with the Pistons before signing with the Knicks as a free agent in the summer of 1996. In his first four return visits, he averaged just eight points and shot 11-of-44 from the field.

However, he notched 23 points in the Knicks' final appearance here last season and tonight picked up where he left off. Houston scored 20 in the first half, helping the Knicks open a 56-40 halftime lead.

"Personally, I never thought there was an albatross here," said Houston, who was booed throughout by the fans. "I've just always put a lot of pressure on myself when I've played here."

New York grabbed its biggest lead at 78-57 on a jumper by Kurt Thomas with 2:56 remaining in the third quarter and took an 80-61 advantage into the final period.

"We're playing well together," New York's Latrell Sprewell said. "I love to see when myself or Allan or LJ (Larry Johnson) gets double-teamed because we can kick it out and someone gets a wide-open look. That's the way we've been playing since Game One -- very unselfish."

But Houston was held scoreless over the final 12 minutes and Detroit made a run, closing within 92-85 on two foul shots by Jerome Williams.

Chris Childs hit a 3-pointer to make it 97-86 with two minutes remaining and Detroit got no closer than eight thereafter. Marcus Camby dominated inside with 19 points and 13 rebounds for New York.

Sprewell and Johnson contributed 13 points apiece for the Knicks while Charlie Ward added 12.

"This is a great win for us because we started so quickly and stopped them when they made a run," New York coach Jeff Van Gundy said. "Allan had it rolling. It's no secret we're gonna go to Allan, Latrell and Larry."

Jerry Stackhouse scored 30 points and Grant Hill added 23 for the Pistons, who are off to an 0-3 start after dropping their home opener. Detroit opened the season with losses in Miami and Orlando.

"We just keep getting off to such a bad start," Stackhouse said. "In two of our three games now, we've gotten off to a bad start and that makes it too hard. We matched them basket for basket for a while but they just kept making every shot they took."

"We just haven't been able to get into a flow on either end of the floor," Hill added. "We executed really well in the preseason and we haven't done that in the regular season. We just can't get it together."

New York shot 54 percent (39-of-72) from the field while holding Detroit to just 39 percent (32-of-83). In their two defeats here last season, the Knicks averaged just 69.5 points.

"We didn't do a good job of pushing the ball upcourt and getting into the running game and we didn't play very well defensively at the start," Detroit coach Alvin Gentry said. "When you do that, you dig yourself such a hole that you have to expend so much energy just to get back into the game."

New York committed 20 turnovers but assisted on 26 of its 39 baskets. The Knicks also made 18-of-23 foul shots.

"All that matters is that we came out and played well," Van Gundy said. "We moved the ball to the open man. Even the shots we didn't make were pretty good looks."

Detroit got virtually nothing from its big men as Don Reid, Christian Laettner and Loy Vaught combined for just two points and five rebounds.

"We've got to get more from our big guys, more rebounding and more scoring," Gentry said. "It's a little too much pressure on us not having an inside game at all."
