Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- The Los Angeles Clippers' first victory at the Staples Center turned into a block party.

The Clippers set a franchise record with 19 blocks en route to a 91-81 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers, who are off to an 0-3 start.

Los Angeles' previous blocks record was 17 against Sacramento on February 23, 1993. The New Jersey Nets hold the league mark of 22 against the Denver Nuggets on December 12, 1991.

Derek Anderson scored 21 points and rookie Lamar Odom added 18 for the Clippers, who used a 24-3 second-half run to overcome 29 turnovers. Odom continued to sparkle, throwing in a 35-foot banker at the first-half buzzer.

"This team was confident coming into the season," Odom said. "But it was big for us to get this win. We thought we should have played better at the end. We didn't finish well."

Los Angeles was 27-of-31 from the line, with Anderson hitting 15 of his 17 attempts. Brian Skinner and Maurice Taylor grabbed 11 and 10 rebounds, respectively, helping the Clippers outrebound Philadelphia, 52-44.

The 76ers finished with just seven assists and the starters shot a combined 30 percent (15-of-50) from the field. Overall, Philadelphia shot 34 percent (29-of-86).

Slumping Allen Iverson scored 21 points but made just 6-of-16 shots and is 10-of-36 from the field in the last two games.

"We tried to force the ball out of Iverson's hands and let some big guys do the rest of the work," Anderson said.

"It was an addrenaline rush (defending Iverson)," Clippers guard Troy Hudson added. "I was playing one of the best players in the league. I had to step up to the challenge."

Clippers center Michael Olowokandi was held scoreless in 26 minutes but blocked six shots. Brian Skinner added four and Odom and Taylor three apiece. Philadelphia had 11 blocks.

"We started playing defense and made a big run, blocked shots, steals," Odom said. "Everybody is learning their roles. They threw a tight press at us and woke us up."

After Tyrone Nesby's jumper capped Los Angeles' big run at 72-53 with 10:35 remaining, the Sixers made it interesting. George Lynch scored 13 of his 15 points in the fourth quarter, including a layup that cut the deficit to 82-76 with 1:30 to go.

Maurice Taylor's tip-in and Odom's two foul shots gave Los Angeles a comfortable 86-76 cushion with 49 seconds to play.

Hudson added 16 points in his first start for the Clippers, who did not get their first win last season until the 18th game. Los Angeles avoided its fifth 0-3 start in eight years.

"He hustled his butt off challenging Iverson," Clippers coach Chris Ford said of Hudson. "As the game wore on, it was obvious Troy matched up well. I was playing a hunch starting him."

"I'm just disappointed," Iverson added. "I thought we had a chance to win every game. Obviously, you think you'll get over the hump, but it just didn't happen."

The Sixers, who host the Seattle SuperSonics Monday in their home opener, again played without injured big men Theo Ratliff and Matt Geiger.

Philadelphia grabbed a 50-48 lead on Iverson's two foul shots with 7:30 remaining in the third quarter before Taylor's 13-footer jumper and two foul shots triggered the run and gave the Clippers the lead for good.

"The Clippers are a good young team," Lynch said. "They've got a lot of confidence. We gave them confidence giving them a comfortable lead and they took advantage of it. You can't spot a team 19 points and keep coming back."

The Clippers have won six straight at home against the 76ers. The teams did not meet in Los Angeles last season during the lockout-abbreviated season.

"Our starting five right now has to figure out how to keep this team together until we get everyone healthy," Lynch said
