Portland (4-0) at Utah (2-2) 8:00 pm EST ---------------------------------------------------------------- SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- The unbeaten Portland Trail Blazers host the team they knocked out of the Western Conference playoffs last season, the .500 Utah Jazz.
Portland has demonstrated a devastating combination of depth and pure athletic prowess in the early season. The Blazers have looked more and more impressive with each of their four victories, culminating in Saturday's 97-82 rout of the Los Angeles Lakers in which they frustrated Shaquille O'Neal and coach Phil Jackson.
Playing without Brian Grant, who is recovering from knee surgery, and Rasheed Wallace, out with a groin injury, the Trail Blazers simply relied on some of their other stars.
Scottie Pippen scored 19 points and Arvydas Sabonis and Damon Stoudamire added 17 apiece for the Portland, which never trailed after the first period. The Blazers have won their four games this season by an average of 17.5 points.
Last season, Portland killed Utah's hopes of returning to the NBA Finals for a third straight season by eliminating them in the conference semifinals before getting swept by San Antonio.
Karl Malone continued to close on Michael Jordan for third place on the all-time scoring list by collecting 31 points as the Jazz cruised to a 94-79 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers on Monday.
Malone needs only 236 points to catch Jordan (29,277) after helping the Jazz avoid their second 1-3 start in three seasons.
Utah took two of three regular-season meetings from Portland.
