Game Story

MIAMI (Ticker) -- Alonzo Mourning had a season-high 33 points and 16 rebounds and Tim Hardaway added 19 points and 14 assists as the Miami Heat held on to defeat the Indiana Pacers, 113-101.

Miami used a powerful inside game and its athleticism to storm to a 20-point lead in the second quarter and went on to take the first meeting between last season's division winners in the Eastern Conference.

Jalen Rose led Indiana (2-2) with 17 points and Al Harrington continued his surprising early-season production with 15. Reggie Miller was held to 13 points on 3-of-10 shooting, the first time he did not lead the team in scoring this season.

The Pacers shot only 41 percent (39-of-95) from the field, including 37 percent (22-of-59) in the first half.

Hardaway scored 12 points in the first quarter, including eight during a 10-0 run late in the period. Clarence Weatherspoon had nine of his 11 points in the quarter as Miami opened a 40-28 advantage. The Heat shot 62 percent (15-of-24) in the opening 12 minutes.

"We got off to a good start and came ready to play," Miami coach Pat Riley said. "The offense shot the ball extremely well."

The Heat scored the first eight points of the second quarter. Weatherspoon dunked, Mourning made a layup and a dunk and rookie Anthony Carter hit his only basket of the game as Miami built a 48-28 lead with 9:48 left before halftime.

After a driving layup by Hardaway gave Miami a 19-point edge with 2:10 remaining, the Pacers scored the final 10 points of the half. Rik Smits converted two 3-point plays and had a tip-in as Indiana climbed within 64-55 at intermission.

"We played a great three minutes," Indiana coach Larry Bird said. "We really finished strong. Having been down by 20 points, I was happy going into the locker room only being down by nine points."

However, Miami went on a 14-4 run to start the third quarter, opening a 78-59 lead with 8:22 left as P.J. Brown scored six points and Dan Majerle had four.

Indiana cut the deficit to 82-71 on two free throws by Sam Perkins with 5:33 to go, but the Heat answered again with nine straight points, the final coming after Miller was called for a technical foul.

"It seemed every time we made a run, they answered it," Miller noted. "We did a good job of getting back into the ballgame in the second quarter. Anytime you play against a defensive-minded team and they make stretches like that, it's tough. There's only so many runs you have left in you."

Miami shot nearly 52 percent (48-of-93) from the field, had a 52-47 rebounding edge and held the advantage in points in the paint (64-44) and fast-break points (16-6).

"We got a lot more easier looks because we were running the ball," Hardaway said. "We rebounded, got the ball out and just ran it. (We had) more fast breaks than usual."
