Game Story

HOUSTON (Ticker) -- In a game highlighted by a fight between veteran superstars Shaquille O'Neal and Charles Barkley, a promising rookie showed flashes of greatness before coming up short.

Steve Francis scored 26 points and grabbed 10 rebounds but was late getting off a potential winning shot as time expired on the Houston Rockets, who slipped to 0-5 with a heartbreaking 89-88 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers.

Francis, who was acquired by the Rockets in a blockbuster deal after being selected second overall in the draft by Vancouver, hit half his 18 floor shots and handed out five assists.

But with the game on the line and the ball in his hands, Francis was unable to shake off a defender and appeared to be struck on the face by Ron Harper while trying to unleash the game's final shot.

"I thought there was obvious contact but that was not called," Francis said. "We have to come back on Friday night and get one back. This is my first fight to see in the NBA. Charles did not initiate it, their guy did."

Francis, whose grandmother was in attendance at the sold-out Compaq Center, laid on the floor inconsolable for several moments before his teammates lifted him to his feet.

The Rockets are off to their worst start since 1982, when they lost their first nine games. Barkley, who has been outspoken about his club's uninspired play, showed a little too much spirit late in the second quarter.

After grabbing a rebound under his own basket, Barkley was hit in the head by O'Neal and fired the ball at the 7-1 center's head. O'Neal countered with a wild roundhouse left that missed before Barkley went low on the big man and tried to lift the 320-pound O'Neal by his legs before the rest of the players on the court jumped in.

"Obviously Charles didn't want to play and he did something unsportsmanslike and I reacted," O'Neal said. "He did one of his stupid things and got ejected. I am frustrated at myself for losing my self-control.

"He will be the first one to tell you he's very lucky a couple of guys grabbed me," he added.

Both players were sent off the court and suspensions and fines are imminent. Rockets coach Rudy Tomjanovich also received a technical foul for arguing with officials.

"This is for the league to handle," Tomjanovich said. "I thought Charles grabbed the guy in a defensive situation but it's not my place to comment. We did not take advantage of Shaq being out of the game. We have to learn how to execute late and make our free throws."

Glen Rice scored 24 points and A.C. Green and Derek Fisher added 14 apiece for Los Angeles (5-1), which was coming off a pair of physical battles with Dallas that saw O'Neal repeatedly fouled.

Rick Fox collected 11 points off the bench for Los Angeles, which shot 40 percent (32-of-81) from the field. The Lakers took a 50-49 halftime lead on Green's desperation 37-footer at the buzzer.

Hakeem Olajuwon had 15 points and 10 rebounds for Houston, which shot 41 percent (30-of-74) and held a 44-42 advantage on the boards.

Barkley was limited to five points in nine minutes. O'Neal had six and seven rebounds in 15 minutes.

At halftime, Lakers coach Phil Jackson expressed displeasure over O'Neal's inability to maintain his composure, but did not indicate whether his star center was at fault for the exchange.

"I couldn't see from my angle, at first I didn't think Shaq had done anything," Jackson said. "But in looking at it from another angle, he may have shoved him. Charles became upset and instigated the fight, that changed the complexion of the game -- the players were more intense and excited."

O'Neal also earned an ejection Saturday for flinging a ball at Portland forward Jermaine O'Neal after an intentional foul during the Lakers' lone loss.

Olajuwon hit the second of two free throws with 4:20 to play, givin Houston its final lead, 81-79. Rice answered by sinking a pair from the stripe and Green put Los Angeles ahead for good, 83-81, with a 19-footer with 3:24 remaining.

Fisher gave the Lakers an 88-84 lead with a 3-pointer with 2:10 left. After Green hit a free throw, Carlos Rogers dunked and Francis made two from the stripe to set up the wild finish.

Fisher attempted to put away the game but fired an ill-advised 3-pointer with 20 seconds left that Rogers rebounded. Francis received the ensuing inbounds pass but dribbled himself into a trap along the left baseline before calling a timeout with six seconds to go.

Francis appeared to have an opening after shaking Harper in the lane when play resumed but appeared to make one move too many and released the ball just after time expired.

"There was contact but it was not called but that is all I have to say about that," Tomjanovich said.
