Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Tim Duncan scored 22 points and he and Terry Porter each had six straight points during the fourth quarter for the San Antonio Spurs as they notched their seventh straight victory over the Los Angeles Clippers, 99-94.

Duncan hit three field goals in the paint as the Spurs gained a 90-85 lead with 3:27 remaining. Porter made a layup with 2:23 left and buried a jumper 58 seconds later to close a 13-7 run and give San Antonio a 94-87 lead, its biggest cushion in the fourth quarter.

Derek Anderson hit a layup and rookie Lamar Odom made a pair of free throws to pull the Clippers within 94-91 with 59 seconds left. The Spurs increased their lead to four when Porter made 1-of-2 free throws 15 seconds later.

The Clippers fell apart late in the game. Tyrone Nesby, who had been 0-for-8 from the floor, missed a layup and David Robinson grabbed the rebound. Jaren Jackson was fouled and he made two foul shots with 34 seconds left for a 97-91 cushion.

Avery Johnson scored 14 points while Mario Elie added 12 for San Antonio, which has not lost to Los Angeles since December 4, 1997 and completed a 3-1 road trip.

Duncan, who also grabbed 17 rebounds, was happy with his overall play, but not the fact that he shot just 8-of-24 from the field.

"They were playing tough defense and I was missing a lot of shots I usually make," Duncan said. "They are a young team that is very athletic. They just have to put some things together and they'll make a run at anybody."

"The funny thing about Tim is that even though he didn't have a good shotting night, he competes on every play," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "He had 17 rebounds and made his shots down the stretch. That's what makes him great."

Anderson made 10-of-17 shots and scored 28 points, two shy of his career high which he set April 3, 1998 against the Los Angeles Lakers. Taylor scored 18 points and Odom added 16 for Los Angeles (1-4).

"I felt we could have won this game. I think we should have won this game," Taylor said. "We just haven't shot the ball as well as we're capapble. I thinks that's the difference between winning and losing."

"The first day of training camp and every day since, I learn something new," Odom added. "I have confidence, lots of confidence and I haven't played in this league very long."

Duncan scored 11 points in the first half and Samaki Walker came off the bench to add nine as the Spurs opened a 51-46 lead. Odom and Anderson paced the Clippers in the first half with 10 points apiece.

Anderson scored 12 points in the third quarter, including five during a 16-8 run that moved Los Angeles within 63-62 with 4:19 left.
