Game Story

AUBURN HILLS, Michigan (Ticker) -- Kevin Willis scored 18 points and grabbed 13 rebounds off the bench as the surprising Toronto Raptors used a late first-quarter surge to post a 123-106 triumph over the Detroit Pistons.

Toronto used a balanced attack and a strong effort on the boards to win for the fourth time in five games. Doug Christie led the Raptors with 24 points and Vince Carter added 22 and 11 rebounds.

Seven Toronto players scored in double figures and three had at least 11 rebounds. The Raptors, who shot nearly 54 percent (45-of-84), also held a 51-37 edge on the boards.

"The difference was they played last night," Raptors coach Butch Carter said, referring to Detroit's 110-92 victory over Boston. "We needed to get off to a good start. Their three big guys played 40 minutes last night so they probably were tired. We have to take advantage of those situations."

"It was just a win," Vince Carter said. "I don't know if it was easy or hard, but when you execute your offense and do what the coach asks us to do, the game is easier. You make the game easier by going out and doing what you are supposed to do."

As surprising as Toronto has been, the Pistons have been equally disappointing. They shot 39 percent (35-of-90) from the field in falling to 1-5.

Grant Hill scored 25 points and Jerry Stackhouse had 21 for the Pistons, but the duo combined to shoot 12-of-44 from the floor. Hill was 13-of-17 at the free throw line.

"We have got to find a way to create our own intensity," Stackhouse said. "You can't count on the fans or anyone else to get us motivated to play. They came out and took the wind out of our sails. I think that can do a lot to the psyche."

Christian Laettner's layup with 8:13 left in the opening quarter pulled Detroit within 10-9, but Christie began an 11-3 spurt with a 17-footer from the right wing. Charles Oakley made a layup with 7:10 to go and canned a 17-footer 64 seconds later for a 16-9 cushion.

Lindsey Hunter buried a 3-pointer for Detroit but Antonio Davis sank a nine-footer to extend the Raptors' lead to 18-12. Alvin Williams capped the burst with a three-point play with 5:18 to go.

The Pistons never got closer than six the rest of the quarter and when they drew within 36-28 with a minute to go, Vince Carter sank a seven-footer with 47 seconds left and Christie buried a 3-pointer.

The Raptors continued to pull away in the second quarter. Willis hit two free throws 57 seconds in and Dell Curry hit a long 3-pointer to put Toronto ahead 46-28. Christie scored 17 and Willis 12 in the opening 24 minutes as Toronto led 74-57 at the break.

"My body felt good and mentally I was really in tune," Willis said. "We have a lot of different guys, that is the beauty of this team. If we continue to stay in sync and play within ourselves, the stars will take care of what they need to take care of."

"You are not going to beat anyone when you play defense like that," added Pistons coach Alvin Gentry. "When you give up 74 points in a half you are going to be in a hole. Offensively we were fine but we never had a chance when you give up 123 points."

The Pistons got within 94-84 with 92 seconds left in the third quarter but never were able to reduce the deficit to single digits.

Antonio Davis had 10 points and 11 rebounds, Muggsy Bogues added 12 points and seven assists and Curry contributed 10 points.
