Game Story

VANCOUVER, British Columbia (Ticker) -- The Golden State Warriors made sure their awful start would not be as bad as the previous two seasons.

John Starks scored 22 points and Chris Mills added 20 off the bench as the Warriors notched their first victory of the season with their sixth straight win over the Vancouver Grizzlies, 103-93.

The Grizzlies (2-3) squandered a chance to climb above .500 for the first time since winning the first two games in franchise history in 1995.

Starks made 8-of-15 shots as Golden State connected on 47 percent (40-of-86). Mills' performance helped the Warriors' reserves outscore the Grizzlies' subs, 39-10.

Golden State (1-4), which swept four games from Vancouver last season, began 0-5 last season and 0-9 in 1997. Its victory left the Chicago Bulls as the NBA's only winless team.

"We had to get this road win before facing Houston at home," Starks said. "They were committed to starting well and taking the crowd out of he game. Tonight we were committed on both ends of the floor."

Mills scored six points and Starks added five in a 14-4 run that opened a 54-31 lead with 3:24 left in the first half. Golden State held a 58-41 halftime lead as Starks scored 14 points and Mills 13.

With forward Jason Caffey and center Erick Dampier out with injuries, Mills came up with a huge performance.

"We woke up," he said. "I'm happy to help out the team off the bench. We made a conscious effort to play defense and make the extra pass. When we play as a team and look for one another, we look very good on the offensive end."

"He is happy and he accepts his role off the bench," Warriors coach P.J. Carlesimo said. "It is the hardest we've played defensively so far. You got to give the Grizzlies credit. They kept playing and kept pounding us on the boards."

Mookie Blaylock scored five points during a 10-4 burst as the Warriors rebuilt the advantage to 76-53 with 3:34 left in the third quarter.

Shareef-Abdur Rahim paced Vancouver with 21 points and 15 rebounds and has a double-double in every game this season. He just missed the third triple-double in franchise history Wednesday against Atlanta.

Michael Dickerson and Bryant Reeves each added 20 points for the Grizzlies, who trailed 82-61 after three quarters and got no closer than 10 points in the final period.

"We were not mentally ready to play," Grizzlies coach Brian Hill said. "I saw it at practice today. We've made great strides these last two games before breaking down tonight."

Grizzlies guard Felipe Lopez aggravated a right shoulder injury in the second quarter and did not return.
