Game Story

SAN ANTONIO (Ticker) -- Jerome Kersey's 14-foot jumper with 8.9 seconds left in overtime and a controversial no-call on an inbounds pass lifted the San Antonio Spurs past the Indiana Pacers, 90-87.

After Mark Jackson drained a 3-pointer with 97 seconds left to put Indiana on top, 85-82, San Antonio's Mario Elie hit two free throws with 45 seconds left. A turnover by Sam Perkins led to Kersey's jumper that put San Antonio ahead for good.

"They were doubling down on Tim (Duncan) and he made a nice pass," Kersey said. "I was wide-open."

"Jerome was great tonight," said Spurs coach Gregg Popovich. "The whole team competed well. In the first half we didn't compete. We were acting like someone was supposed to hand us something. We've been playing a lot like that lately. In the second half we competed and made some stops."

Indiana inbounded at midcourt and Reggie Miller's pass for Jalen Rose appeared to go off Kersey's hand and out of bounds. No call was made and San Antonio took possession.

Duncan and David Robinson, who sent the game to overtime with a free throw with 2.2 seconds left in regulation, had 22 points apiece for San Antonio. Elie added 15 for the Spurs, who have won 17 straight regular-season home games.

"This is a good win to build off of," Robinson said. "This is the kind of game we have to win. This win against the Pacers was really important for us. We just felt good about the way we came back."

Rose tied a career high with 28 points and Perkins had 16 for the Pacers, whose three-game winning streak was stopped.

"For the most part we played a great game against the world champions," Pacers coach Larry Bird said. "We had a lead late but could not make it hold up. We battled hard and fought down the stretch."

Two free throws by Robinson with 4:52 left in the fourth quarter put San Antonio on top 69-68. Rose sank a 15-footer 24 seconds later to spark an 8-0 run. Perkins capped the run with a 3-pointer with 3:03 remaining, but Indiana did not score the rest of regulation.

Terry Porter got the Spurs within 76-74 with a 3-pointer with 50 seconds to go. Perkins fouled Robinson but the Spurs center made just one of two free throws. Rose threw away a pass on the ensuing possession and Robinson again was fouled.

Trailing 76-75 with 2.2 seconds left, he missed the first but made the second to force overtime.

The game remained a one-possession contest until the second of Elie's free throws with 6.4 seconds left put the Spurs on top 89-85. Elie is 14-of-14 from the free throw line this season.

Perkins hit a driving layup with 2.9 seconds left, but Porter hit a free throw and the Pacers never attempted a tying 3-pointer.

Indiana has dropped six of the last seven meetings in the series.

"There is no such thing as a moral victory," Rose said. "We had a chance but a chance is only worth something if you pull it out and get over the hump. We had to knock some more shots down and execute better down the stretch."
