Game Story

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- Gary Payton scored 21 points and handed out 11 assists as the surprising Seattle SuperSonics continued their hot start with a 111-108 victory over the Golden State Warriors.

After entering the season with a number of question marks, the SuperSonics are one of five teams in the league to win seven games. They have won all three of their home contests and four of five overall.

Vin Baker tallied 23 points and second-year forward Ruben Patterson added 20 for the Sonics, who led by as many as 12 points in the fourth quarter before hanging on for the win.

Trailing 111-108, the Warriors had a chance to send the game into overtime but Mookie Blaylock's desperation 30-footer bounded off the backboard as time expired.

Seattle has beaten the Warriors eight straight times at home.

"I'm not happy about it. We should play better than this," Payton said. "This is just a lucky night. Everybody knows what went wrong. We are satisfied with nothing because we've accomplished nothing yet."

Antawn Jamison matched a career high with 27 points and Adonal Foyle established a new career-best with 16 for Golden State, which has dropped six of its first eight games.

Golden State converted just 11-of-19 foul shots and also turned the ball over 18 times which led to 23 points for Seattle.

"We turned it over a few too many times and they converted," Warriors coach P.J. Carlesimo said. "They are a good team for doing it. We didn't make free throws. If we make free throws we could overcome all the other things we did."

Leading by six after three quarters, the Sonics started the final period on a 14-6 run, capped by a layup by Patterson with 6:53 left to open a 103-91 advantage. Chuck Person, who was making his season debut, drained a pair of 3-pointers in the surge.

The Warriors answered that spurt with one of their own, scoring the next eight points to cut the deficit to four with just over four minutes left.

After struggling in his rookie season, Jamison is emerging into a force for the Warriors. He came into game leading the team in scoring at 16.3 points per contest and has scored 74 points in his last three games.

Golden State was still within three with under a minute left. But after Baker missed a shot, Horace Grant grabbed the rebound, was fouled and and made two free throws for a 111-106 cushion with 37 seconds remaining.

"We just didn't put them away," Patterson said. "They hit some tough shots, some big shots. Even though they played last night they came in here and played real well."

Jamison tallied 18 points in a high-scoring first half after which the Warriors led 58-57. Baker was almost as good for Seattle, finishing the half with 17 points.

"We didn't play great on the defensive end tonight," Baker said. "They scored a lot of points in the first half. It's something we have to work on. We have to make an effort to play better defense and hit the boards."

Each team enjoyed excellent shooting games. Seattle shot 53 percent (45-of-85), while the Warriors finished at 52 percent (46-of-88).

Reserves Terry Cummings and Chris Mills chipped in with 16 points apiece for the Warriors, whose bench managed a 36-18 edge over Seattle's reserves.
