Game Story

LOS ANGELES (Ticker) -- Shaquille O'Neal gave coach Phil Jackson a pair of treats tonight.

First, the 7-1 center scored 41 points to lead the Los Angeles Lakers to an easy 103-95 victory over Jackson's former team, the Chicago Bulls. And to put the icing on the basketball guru's cake, O'Neal actually made most of his free throws.

"I just tried to focus a little more on my shot, I still missed too many," O'Neal said.

O'Neal entered the contest shooting a dreadful 32 percent (32-of-100) at the line, including a 2-of-14 performance during Thursday's loss at Denver. But tonight the big man found his touch, sinking a career-best 19-of-31 free throws en route to his season-high point total.

"I'm starting to get my game back," O'Neal said. "Everything else is there except from the line. I just have to pick up that part of my game. I'm going to pick it up, it can't get any worse."

"I thought Shaq was tremendous," Chicago coach Tim Floyd said. "I thought he played with a lot of poise. Good for him. He is a great player. He has had his struggles."

The crowd at the Staples Center grew more and more boisterous with each shot O'Neal buried from the stripe and were absolutely besides themselves with joy when the perennial All-Star hit seven in a row and 8-of-9 during the fourth quarter.

"My fans have always been great and have always stuck behind me," O'Neal said. "I think they know that I'm going to come in here, play hard and give 100 percent."

O'Neal also made 11-of-13 shots from the floor and grabbed 17 boards for the Lakers, who improved to 4-1 in their new arena.

Jackson, who led the Bulls to six NBA titles during his tenure with Chicago, watched his new club pound what remained of his old one early and often. The Lakers raced to a 30-21 lead after one quarter and never looked back.

"I had absolutely no reflex at all about (the Bulls), none," said Jackson.

Although the Bulls bear little resemblance to the club Jackson guided to three straight titles on two seperate occasions, they did receive a bit of encouragment from a pair of budding stars.

No. 1 overall pick Elton Brand posted season highs with 29 points and 17 rebounds and fellow first-round pick Ron Artest added 20 for the slumping Bulls, who dropped to 1-8.

"I hopefully want to progress enough to get this team some wins," Brand said. "It's still early and I'm still feeling myself around the team. But hopefully we can keep building and growing."

Rookie Dedric Willoughby and 11-year veteran Hersey Hawkins scored 15 points apiece for the Bulls, who shot 36 percent (31-of-86) and yielded 20 points off 17 turnovers.

Chicago employed the defense used by most Lakers' opponenents this season. Whenever O'Neal caught the ball in the post, he was immediately sent to the line with a pseudo-intentional foul.

O'Neal and the Lakers parlayed the strategy into a 43-26 advantage in free throws made.

Glen Rice scored 17 points, Derek Fisher 11 and Brian Shaw added 10 for Los Angeles, which shot 46 percent (29-of-63) and held a 46-41 advantage on the boards.

Artest's 3-pointer with 7:27 left in the first quarter gave Chicago a 12-9 lead. O'Neal made 1-of-2 at the line and Fisher drained a 23-footer to put the Lakers ahead, 13-12, with 6:23 remaining.

"Shaq dunking and making free throws -- that's crazy," said Artest.

Hawkins drained a 24-footer to forge a 15-15 tie with 5:32 to go in the opening period but Rice sandwiched a free throw by O'Neal with two jumpers as Los Angeles took the lead for good, 20-15 with 4:26 left.

O'Neal followed with a nine-footer, Ron Harper hit a pair of free throws and Chicago never seriously challenged again.
