Game Story

ORLANDO, Florida (Ticker) -- The Orlando Magic appear to be coming back to earth.

Eddie Jones had 30 points and eight rebounds and Bobby Phills scored a season-high 27 points off the bench to lead the Charlotte Hornets to their first road win, a 103-92 triumph over the Magic.

"I wanted this game real bad," Jones said. "We just couldn't get a road game. We knew this one we had to have. We face a tough team (Portland) tomorrow night, so we needed some type of consistency."

Anthony Mason had 16 points, 15 rebounds and eight assists for Charlotte, which improved to 1-4 on the road. David Wesley had 13 points and five assists for the Hornets, who shot 52 percent (11-for-21) from 3-point range and defeated the Magic for the second time this season.

"You always have to build on both sides of the game," said Mason. "Hopefully we will continue to work on our outside shots, keep working the ball inside and finding the open man."

Charlotte also dominated inside, outscoring Orlando in the paint, 42-30.

Jones connected on 5-of-7 3-pointers and Phills made 4-of-8 from behind the arc. Phills also made 4-of-8 3-pointers and had 20 points in Charlotte's season-opening 100-86 win over Orlando on November 2.

"People may say that Bobby may be underappreciated, but let me tell you, he's not underappreciated by me," said Charlotte coach Paul Silas. "He's always been a guy that's gonna give 110 percent and now that he's coming off of the bench I really think that he's going to give is production and that's what we need because we didn't have a lot of production coming off the bench before."

Darrell Armstrong had 18 points and 10 assists and Monty Williams added 14 points for Orlando, which has lost four straight after a surprising 4-2 start.

"That was a tough one. That was the first game that I thought we looked like everyone thought we would look," said Orlando coach Doc Rivers. "We didn't have the energy and we showed a lack of experience. But our team fought back and they played until the end. If they had played that way for four quarters than maybe it would have been a different game."

Williams and Tariq Abdul-Wahad combined to make 12-of-19 shots, but the rest of the Magic shot just 23 percent (15-for-65).

Jones scored nine points in the first quarter as the Hornets seized a 28-25 lead.

Rookie Corey Maggette, who had 11 points, dunked to pull the Magic within 34-32 with 8:52 to go in the second quarter. Jones and Wesley responded with consecutive 3-pointers to bring the lead to 40-32 with 8:01 remaining. Back-to-back baskets by Wesley and Phills gave Charlotte a 58-44 cushion 50 seconds before halftime.

Mason made a short hook shot to trigger a 19-2 run and give the Hornets a 62-48 lead with 8:56 remaining in the third. Phills had five points on the run and capped it with a 3-pointer to give Charlotte its biggest lead of the game, 79-50, with 2:54 left.

The Magic scored the first 10 points of the fourth period to close within, 81-69, when Chucky Atkins drove for a layup with 9:02 left. Jones ended Orlando's run with a 3-pointer for a 15-point cushion with 8:28 to play.
