Game Story

DALLAS (Ticker) -- The Sacramento Kings are learning how to win.

Chris Webber scored 24 points and keyed a fourth-quarter surge, leading the Kings to their fifth straight win, a 103-94 victory over the Dallas Mavericks.

The Mavericks took a 91-90 lead with 4:49 left after Robert Pack converted a layup. But that was the last lead they would have as Darrick Martin followed with a layup for the Kings, triggering a 13-4 run to close the game.

Webber, who made 10-of-19 shots from the floor, had six points in the decisive run for Sacramento, which has won all five of its games in North America this season. The Kings split a pair of games with Minnesota in Japan to start the season.

Predrag Stojakovic added 15 points for the Kings, who shocked the league last season, finishing with a 27-23 record and narrowly missed defeating Utah in the first round of the playoffs.

"We've had some games where we've really played solid and some that we played well in spurts," Sacramento coach Rick Adelman said. "This was one where we played well in spurts. Our team has lots of resiliency. They just keep coming at you. We do just enough to win the games."

Michael Finley scored 24 points and Pack added 20 for Dallas, which has dropped five of its last seven games.

"Them making their shots in the fourth quarter was definitely the difference in the game," Pack said. "It came down to execution and we didn't make plays. Unfortunately, they did.

"Their learning to win in the fourth quarter. That's the point we have to get to. We need to learn to win down the stretch like they did tonight."

After Martin gave the Kings the lead, Dirk Notwitzki made 1-of-2 foul shots for Dallas before Webber scored four straight points for a 98-92 lead with 75 seconds to play.

In game featuring plenty of shots hoisted up by both teams, Webber finished 10-of-19 from the floor and also grabbed 11 rebounds.

Sacramento shot 40 percent (36-of-91), while the Mavericks also finished at 40 percent (40-of-101).

Shawn Bradley hit 1-of-2 free throws for the Mavericks before Jon Barry sealed the win for the Kings by making five free throws over the final 22 seconds.

"We're executing at ends of games. That's something we didn't do much of last year," Barry said. "We learning to win. We want to get better and better and hopefully play well enough not to be in close situations, but put the game away."

Barry scored 15 points to go along with Stojakovic's point total as the Kings reserves outscored Dallas' bench, 50-13. In Thursday's win at Houston, the Kings got 68 points from their bench.

"The confidence we have in our bench is based on us going at each other in practice. We don't like each other then," Webber said. "The black team which is the "bench team," always tries to kill the "gray team," which is the starters. It happens a lot in practice, so none of this surprises us."

Dallas came into the contest second in the league in scoring followed by the Kings. The teams did nothing to disappoint in the opening half, combining for 109 points with Sacramento holding a one point lead.

Erick Strickland added 18 points and Nowitzki 17 for the Mavericks, who failed in their bid to score 100 points for the fifth straight game.
