Game Story

INDIANAPOLIS (Ticker) -- The Atlanta Hawks won their first road game of the season as Dikembe Mutombo had 16 points, 16 rebounds and five blocked shots in a 105-99 victory over the Indiana Pacers, who suffered their first loss at Conseco Fieldhouse.

Jim Jackson scored 19 points and Alan Henderson added 16 and 10 rebounds for Atlanta, which was 0-5 on the road but has won its last three games in Indiana. Bimbo Coles tallied 16 points, making 7-of-11 shots, as six of the eight Hawks that played scored in double figures.

"It was a great game for this team," said Atlanta coach Lenny Wilkens. "We knew Indiana would be tough, especially at home. Our defense had an exceptionally good night. We really played well as a team. Our offense moved the ball and (we) were unselfish and it showed in the final scoring statistics."

"The key tonight was crashing the boards and to try to outhustle them," Mutombo said. "We outplayed them and outhustled them tonight. It is a good lift to play 48 minutes as a team, if we can continue we can win a lot of games."

Isaiah Rider, returning from a one-game suspension for missing practice, did not start and had 15 points in 31 minutes for the Hawks. Rider, who has complained about not being the No. 1 option on offense, was just 7-of-22 from the field. The 22 shots were the most by any Hawk.

"I think that will go away," said Mutombo about Rider's problems. "We as a team need to keep talking with him to get him through this."

Roshown McLeod had 12 points and six rebounds for the Hawks, who held a 25-8 advantage in second-chance points.

"They get 17 more second-chance points and that was the difference," said Indiana coach Larry Bird. "That was the softest we played. We didn't force the issue, we didn't take it at the basket. We didn't come to play. They outplayed us. We were so passive all night."

Rik Smits and Reggie Miller each scored 21 points to lead the Pacers, who were 3-0 at their new arena. Smits surpassed his season high in the first quarter when he made 7-of-9 shots from the floor and added a free throw for 15 points.

"The first half was something for me to build on and to have a good game. I didn't," said Smits, who shot just 2-of-11 after the first period. "Atlanta continued to pack in the middle, but I had the open looks, but couldn't get it to fall down. I don't have a reason, but tomorrow's a different day."

The Hawks shot 44 percent (24-for-55) in the first half, but had 13 offensive rebounds en route to a 58-56 lead at the break. Indiana hit 23-of-40 (57.5 percent) shots in the first two quarters but had just three offensive boards.

Atlanta was within 64-62 following Jalen Rose's 16-footer with 9:52 remaining in the third quarter. Mutombo then followed up a miss by Coles with a tip-in 18 seconds later and the Pacers could not cut the deficit under four points thereafter.

McLeod and Coles hit consecutive jumpers to push the lead to 78-69 with 2:54 left in the third third. The Hawks took an 84-74 lead into the final period and built the lead to 93-80 when Jackson made two free throws with 9:33 to play.

Atlanta kept the lead in double digits for most of the fourth period and Jason Terry sank two free throws to make it 101-89 with 3:22 left.

The Pacers managed a 10-2 burst to cut the deficit to 103-99 when Mark Jackson drove for a layup with 1:24 to play. Mutombo then missed a pair of free throws, but blocked a short jumper by Miller at the other end before Jimmy Jackson made a layup with 27 seconds left to cap the scoring.
