Game Story

DENVER (Ticker) -- The Denver Nuggets inched a bit closer to .500 tonight and they did it at the expense of the Chicago Bulls.

The surprising Nuggets got 21 points from Antonio McDyess and Ron Mercer added 14 of his 19 in a pivotal third quarter as Denver posted a 95-86 victory over the struggling Bulls.

Raef LaFrentz scored 14 points, James Posey 11 and Keon Clark (12) while George McCloud (10) chipped in off the bench. Nick Van Exel added eight assists and Clark had nine rebounds for the Nuggets, who improved to 4-5.

"The Bulls deserve a lot of credit," Denver coach Dan Issel said. "Everytime they fell down 12 or 14 points, they fought back and wouldn't give up."

Denver trailed 47-41 at the half but outscored the Bulls 33-18 in the third quarter. The Nuggets shot 11-of-20 from the field and forced six turnovers in the quarter. Denver also held consecutive opponents under 90 points for the first time since January 20-21, 1998.

"We got off to a slow start defensively and they scored 28 points in the first quarter, but I think they had 58 points the rest of the game," Issel added. "I thought we got better defensively as the game went on."

Kornel David led Chicago with 17 points and top draft pick Elton Brand added 16 and nine rebounds. The Bulls fell to 1-9 and had their five-game winning streak against Denver stopped.

Trailing 47-41 at the break, Posey had a dunk and Van Exel buried a 3-pointer. Mercer drained a 3-pointer for a 49-47 lead but Will Perdue converted a layup to tie the contest. The game was still tied at 59-59 with 4:26 to go when another Mercer 3-pointer ignited a 15-6 spurt to end the quarter.

Mercer was 6-of-7 from the field, including 2-of-2 from 3-point range, and scored 14 points in the quarter.

"Everbody's performance and intensity was low in the first half," Mercer said. "We had to step it up and I wanted to take charge in the second half offensively and defensively. We have let some other games slip away, we didn't want to tonight."

Chicago got within 74-68 just under two minutes into the fourth quarter but back-to-back 3-pointers by McCloud pushed the lead back to 12 and the Bulls never got closer than seven the rest of the way.

The Nuggets are 3-2 this season when trailing at the half. Last season they were 3-26 when down at the intermission.

Brand had 10 points and five rebounds in the opening quarter as Chicago opened a 28-22 advantage. David had 11 of his 17 in the first half as the Bulls took a six-point lead into halftime.

"This was a frustrating loss," Bulls coach Tim Floyd said. "I thought we played our best half of basketball this season in the first half. I was proud of our effort. We rebounded well and had good shot selection.

"In the second half, they shot a great percentage and played with great aggressiveness defensively. We have to match their aggressiveness and we did not."

McDyess kept the Nuggets close with 13 of his 21 points in the opening 24 minutes.

"In the first quarter, I was in my rhythm," McDyess said. "I was trying to take the ball to the basket and get more fouls. I didn't want to settle for my jump shot and fadeaway. They were trapping me more in the second half, so I was swinging the ball and trying to get it to the open man."
