Game Story

OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- Latrell Sprewell huffed and he puffed, but in the end it was the rest of the New York Knicks that blew coach P.J. Carlesimo and the Golden State Warriors down.

Sprewell fizzled on the floor in his well-publicized return to Golden State, but the Knicks used a decisive first-quarter run to take control and coasted to an 86-79 triumph.

Sprewell, who was booed lustily upon taking the floor for warmups, never seemed to find his shooting touch and managed just seven points in 32 minutes through three quarters before finishing with 14 on 6-of-17 shooting.

Allan Houston picked up the slack with a team-high 24 points and Kurt Thomas added 14 off the bench for the Knicks, who used a 16-1 first-quarter run to take a 29-18 lead after the one quarter.

"I didn't play the way I wanted to," Sprewell said. "Allan carried us. It was fun for me though. I enjoyed every minute of it."

Sprewell choked Carlesimo during a Warriors team practice on December 1, 1997 and was subsequently suspended and traded to New York. The 6-5 swingman spent the past week telling several tabloids that he was looking forward to returning tonight and "crushing" the Warriors, who left him feeling, "bitter and angry."

Carlesimo was sedate for most of the contest, but Sprewell let off steam throughout the game and exploded after a fourth-quarter dunk, stopping to yell in front of his former coach and teammates.

"(Carlesimo) wasn't really in the picture," Sprewell said. "I was just trying to go out and get the win and do my part to help."

That slam was proceeded by Adonal Foyle's rejection of Sprewell's jam attempt that drew a boisterous response from the crowd that booed the former Warriors star everytime he touched the ball.

Sprewell earned a technical late in the final period after a shouting match with former Knicks forward Chris Mills. He also had a heated exchange with Antawn Jamison earlier in the fourth quarter.

"I think (Mills) was a little frustrated because I had been running off at the mouth," Sprewell said. "I do that sometimes. Especially in a game like this when your emotions are involved. I think he got a little frustrated by that. You know, it comes with the territory."

"With Sprewell, it was as if he had a different view of the game," Mills countered. "He wanted to come in here and kill us. I'm sure he wanted to score 40 or 50 points tonight. His team won, so he got the better of the situation. It was more of a personal thing with him."

Sprewell avoided a pregame handshake with Carlesimo, which is something the coach indicated he was hoping to accomplish.

"There's no obligation," Carlesimo said. "If the opportunity was there, then yeah, I would have shaken hands. I don't think it's fair to say he should have done it. He can act whatever way he wants."

New York had lost five of its previous six contests, but improved to 6-6 with tonight's victory.

Playing before a sellout crowd did not help the Warriors, who slipped to 2-7.

Donyell Marshall scored 19 points and Mills added 17 off the bench for Golden State, which shot 32 percent (28-of-87).

Charlie Ward had 11 points and six assists for the Knicks, who shot 41 percent (31-of-76) and held a 54-43 advantage on the boards.
