Game Story

SAN ANTONIO (Ticker) -- Jaren Jackson scored a season-high 24 points as the defending world champion San Antonio Spurs once again responded to defeat by posting a resounding win, 106-90 over the Dallas Mavericks.

Jackson came off the bench and drained 7-of-16 3-pointers as the Spurs put aside their normal inside post-up game for a perimeter barrage. San Antonio shot a franchise-low five free throws but cracked the 100-point plateau for just the third time in 11 games.

"It's fun when they go in," Jackson said. "I have been struggling lately, I felt good tonight. They were all good looks and I continued to let it go."

The Spurs were coming off their third loss of the season, a 98-88 setback at Milwaukee on Thursday. But they avoided losing consecutive games for the first time this year by running out to an early lead and never looking back.

Jackson scored five points during a 10-0 second-quarter run that gave San Antonio a 45-32 lead with 1:59 remaining in the half. He had 11 points and sank three 3-pointers during the decisive period.

"The way they were rotating tonight just left me open a lot," Jackson said. "They were just doing what their coach wanted them to do. They cut down on us inside. Teams have been pretty attentive to me in past games. Maybe I was just due, I don't know."

Jackson established a career high for 3-pointers made and surpassed Chuck Person's franchise record of 14 long-range attempts in a game.

Tim Duncan had 14 points and 17 rebounds and Chucky Brown added a season-high 16 points as the Spurs improved to 5-0 at the Alamodome. San Antonio has taken 11 of the last 12 meetings with Dallas.

"Overall it was a good defensive effort against a team that is hard to guard," San Antonio coach Gregg Popovich said. "All the guys have the green light to let it fly. We guarded well and stayed with them. I'm pleased with the overall team effort."

Michael Finley scored 19 points and Dirk Nowitzki and Shawn Bradley added 16 apiece for the Mavericks, who have lost six of eight. Dallas slipped to 1-5 on the road.

"They're the champions," Dallas coach Shawn Bradley said. "They are a good, big ballclub. We had quite a challenge in front of us tonight. As a team we left it all on the floor tonight. We just came up a little short."

Erick Strickland tallied 14 points off the bench for Dallas, which shot 40 percent (37-of-92) and committed only 11 turnovers. But the Mavericks were outrebounded, 58-48.

Avery Johnson collected 12 points and eight assists for the Spurs, who shot 46 percent (47-102) and made just 2-of-5 free throws. San Antonio hit 10-of-25 3-pointers.

"I have to give Mario (Elie) credit for that," Johnson said in reponse to the Spurs' success at home. "He got us to start having practice here. We feel good about playing at the Dome."
